Bloomberg: Scott Podsednik and Juan Pierre Are Black Sheep Sleepers

What Mush Franchassa said!

Scott Podsednik and Juan Pierre are eerily similar. The pair of early-30s outfielders share a division, an affinity for high socks and grit, past or present homes in Colorado and the south side of Chicago, and the ire of the sabermetrics community. They also own the same career OPS (.720). But it’s the two players’ ability to swipe bases which them interesting, if unheralded, options in most leagues.

Podsednik is coming off a year in which he hit seven homers in 537 at-bats. That qualifies as a power spurt; Podsednik had hit six homers in his previous 1,407 at-bats. He also hit over .300 for the first time since 2003, his breakout season with the Brewers. Don’t expect a repeat of that feat either.

He’s still a strong stolen base threat, though, especially if he sticks in the Royals’ everyday lineup. After swiping 30 bases last year, Manager Trey Hillman has Podsednik penciled in as the starting left fielder and plans to give him the green light to run often.

...It’s important to note that these players are undervalued because their flaws are well-established in real world analysis. Both Podsednik and Pierre are woefully short on power, especially playing corner outfield spots, where teams typically target far more prolific offensive players. But in fantasy baseball, both could be good targets. In fact, if your fellow league members are sabermetrically savvy, Podsednik and Pierre could be terrific win-ugly value plays.

If you play in a 3 x 3 league where the categories are stolen bases, playing the game the right way, and doing the little things, these guys could battle for a league MVP.

I don't know about Pierre, but Podsednik sucks at "playing the game the right way", unless that means getting picked off, caught stealing, and playing terrible defense.

All things negated by high socks and grit.

Podsednik is good at getting his uniform dirty, I'll give him that.

He's probably the most aggravating player I've ever seen in a White Sox uniform. I haven't seen much of Juan Pierre (I watch very little National League baseball), but he seems to be a much more fundamentally sound player.

Yeah, probably, though Pierre's SB% has dropped off quite a bit the last couple years, suggesting he's losing some speed (as one would expect), which costs him a lot of the difference between him and Podsednik. It'll be interesting to see if he scales back his running if he continues getting caught almost a third of the time.

That said, he's certainly a better outfielder than Pods (despite his laughable throwing arm, he at least takes non-circular routes to the ball), and he's not a boneheaded baserunner (doesn't get picked off much, in my recollection, and he's good at taking the extra base on hits to the outfield). He walks a little less than Pods.

All of which is to say, I damn Pierre with faint praise. I wouldn't want either guy starting in my outfield.

Of course. But if I'm forced to choose between the two, I'll take the one that's not actively screwing things up.

I'm sure all that will change now that he's part of The Process.

For a fantasy league that uses BA instead of OBP I think Pierre is actually a nice get for 2010. He's going to play every day, he'll probably hit .290-.300 with a boatload of at bats so he'll probably score a decent number of runs and I can easily see Ozzie just telling him "run Forrest run" and piling up the steals.

I wouldn't want him on my actual baseball team since he kinda sucks but for fantasy purposes he should be pretty useful.
