Bobby Cox might have to postpone postgame cigar at Shea

Unfair by a White Owl!

Puffing on his usual postgame cigar, Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox flashed a startled look when asked what he thought of Shea Stadium’s total ban on smoking.

“You mean the new one?” he asked, referring to Citi Field, where the New York Mets will begin playing in 2009. No, skipper. The Mets announced in March that they were going smoke-free in their final season at Shea Stadium. The only area where smokers can light up is a designated area outside the park.

Which brings us to Cox, the longtime Braves manager and cigar aficionado. He’ll be at Shea this weekend when the Braves face the Mets in a three-game series. “I think that’s a great idea,” he said after Monday night’s 7-3 victory over Washington at Turner Field (which, by the way, is listed as “a primarily smoke-free facility,” according to the team’s Web site, and lighting up is allowed only in certain entryways, stairwells and landings).

Even for himself?

“The clubhouse doesn’t count,” Cox quipped.

The Mets wouldn’t say Tuesday whether the ban applies to the clubhouses.

Good ####. Interesting read on a potential future conflict with Bobby Cox smoking his post-game cigar. Must-click.

If the Mets could take care of business against the Braves, they wouldn't have to worry about Bobby lighting up a postgame cigar. Of course, if they took care of business, then Larry Chipper Jones wouldn't have named his first child "Shea."

I'd rather see Leyland claw his own eyes out during an interleague game at Sheadeux.

Amusingly, the last sentence of the article has been changed from, "The Mets wouldn’t say Tuesday whether the ban applies to the clubhouses." to "The Mets said they will speak with Cox about the new policy."

Bobby Cox will smoke his cigar in the visiting manager's office after the game, nobody from the Mets will ask him to do otherwise, and no rule will stop him.

I generally make a habit of assuming the worst of the Mets (it's worked out pretty well so far), but even I doubt that. They won't want to get their competition bristled over something so petty.

Does this mean Keith Hernandez hasn't been lighting up in the press box?

There was a story a few years back about Piazza smoking Cuban cigars in the locker room.

Rey Ordonez denied the allegations, if I remember correctly.

Sure, the ban only applies to the unwashed.

I sympathize with Bobby on this one. I have been banned from having the occasional cigar in my office at work. My boss still smokes cigarettes and the smoke drifts all around the workplace however. I am no longer allowed to smoke because one of the other employees objects to it. He claims to have allergies regarding smoke.

BTW - I work for a cigar retailer and wholesaler and customers are allowed to smoke in the store as well.
