Boston Globe: Ortiz hits a new low by going 0 for 7 in defeat

Lack of Speed Stick® Pro: What’s your pits type?

David Ortiz faced his locker and dressed slowly, putting on designer jeans and a blue shirt with a French collar as reporters gathered behind him. He turned around and saw them. His head dropped a little.

Ortiz, for several seasons and countless playoff games, has injected Red Sox games with drama and fans with elation, his larger-than-life persona turning him into a near-cartoon hero. Yesterday, he was something else. More than at any point since he came to the Sox in 2003, Ortiz looked frail and human.

“I’m sorry, guys,” Oritz said. “I don’t feel like talking right now. Just put down, ‘Papi stinks.’ “

Designer jeans? What is this, 1980? No one gets between David and his Calvins?

An essay on Ortiz's woes is understandable. Describing what he was wearing... c'mon, who cares?

It is an outrage that somebody in such a slump would wear Fancy Pants!

He should be ashamed of himself, and I demand he dress like a hobo until he starts hitting again!

I know the latter fact is true, but that first one can't be. Really? (Checking) Yikes, that's embrassing.

Ortiz is going to turn it around evantually. But his days as an elite hitter appear to be numbered.

I'm sad for Ortiz, who's one of my favorite players, but it may be a sign of the Revival of Justice that this sort of news involves a Red Sox player rather than a Yankee. It's about time.

OTOH A-Rod is about 1 for 30 after that initial home run in Baltimore, so I'd better not get too schadenfreudy about all this.

I'm glad I stuck him on the "don't draft" list for my autodraft. Of course that was just based on the fact he's only eligible at utility and was ranked higher than I thought he was worth, but I'm still taking credit for seeing the downfall.

Well, if I have a man on third and less than two outs in a tie ballgame in the bottom of the ninth, I guess there is still no man more "clutch" than David Ortiz.

Many days no home run come to my hut, but Papi has fear? A thousand times no! I never doubted myself for a minute for I knew that my monkey strong bowels were girded with strength like the loins of a dragon ribboned with fat and the opulence of buffalo dung! Glorious sunset of my heart was fading. Soon the super karate monkey death car would park in my space. But Papi has fancy plans, and pants to match! And since April 20th, Ortiz is hitting .250/.379/.395. That's...still pretty bad. But he hasn't been an out machine lately, which is a step up for him.

It's interesting to look at his bb-ref stats.

His popups started last year (17%, 16% this year, 7-8% the previous 5 years). His LD% is about the same (18% this year, 19% the previous 6 years). Whereas in his Minnesota years, his LD% was 27%.

His GB/FB pct is way down (.33) after being pretty consistent (.48 to .61) during his Boston years.

Steroids or not, David Ortiz, as we know him, is done. A few thoughts:

1) If you think of the five years 2003-2007 as his peak, then consider how similar how similar his 2002 and 2008 are - the seven stretch is almost symmetrical...it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up with a 2009 that looks a lot like his 2001 (maybe a little less SLG, a little more OBP). To paraphrase Rick Pitino, "30-year-old David Ortiz is not walking through that door, folks!"

2) Forget the whole steroid thing - should we really be that surprised that a lumbering, career-DH, slow power guy is pulling up at about age 33? Look at George Scott at age 34. Or Willie Horton at 34. Or Greg Luzinski at age 33. Boog Powell at age 34. Ted Kluszewski at about 32. And so forth. When guys like this lose it, it goes fast (I'll see you at the Mo Vaughn HOF induction ceremony!).

Is there a way to search baseball reference for the ratio stats? I'm not quite sure how to intepret the LD% stat, but Mo Vaugh's career mark (27%) is surprisingly high.

I checked a few likely suspects (e.g., Pujols, Bonds, Manny) but so far the only close to him is Helton (26%).

I'm not sure it's quite what you have in mind but at the bottom of each player's ratio stats are his career numbers then the league average (which I assume is over the life of his career). The Hardball Times allows you to sort by different categories including LD% within a given season. Not sure how far back it goes.
   70. puck Posted: May 15, 2009 at 05:36 PM (#3180615)
Thanks, I was looking for career stats. I was wondering who had eye-popping career marks, though I think these only go back to 1988. So far it's more a toy for me, I'm not sure how really to intepret them. I thought Pujols (21% career/18% league avg) and Palmeiro (23%/21%) would be higher.

Now, is br's data from retrosheet and THT's from baseball info solutions? Hmm. I wonder how similar they are...

With the likely financial situation of the NHL, I was thinking more of a straight contraction issue - the Islanders, Coyotes, Predators, Panthers, and a couple others are all burning through cash at a fairly stunning rate. There just aren't enough people willing to fund losses like that, and enough markets to catch the teams if they have to move.

Also, of the "major" sports in the US, Hockey is the most driven by ticket revenue, and that's likely to take an incredibly savage beating over the next year.

Yeah, but even up here, we've only got a couple markets who could reasonably support another team, and one of those is being blocked by the Leafs and the Sabres. Apart from that, Winnipeg might (and that's a questionable "might"), and there's a very mild possibility that Quebec City could.

Really, Hamilton is the only one with a serious chance, and that's largely because an insanely rich individual seems willing to sink a whole pile of cash into the attempt. You're not going to find the same level of interest in doing that for Winnipeg or Quebec.

I believe the team will stay in Long Island. Being the #3 team in the NY market has to be better than #1 in Little Rock or something.

For at least one season in the '90s, LR had two minor league hockey teams. That was ... odd. (I don't think there's even one now.)

He's not your buddy, guy.

He's not your Otis Spann either.

(late to the party, I know)

Get off Papi's lawn, kids. He's gonna do something.

And yet if this article had consisted of two words, "Papi stinks", he probably would have been hurt.

We've already dubbed him "Big Popup" in Game Chatter.

Well, it's certainly more dignified than "Big Crapi."

Andruw Jones hit his 4th HR of the season last night.

Let's say, for the sake of discussion, that Ortiz decided that he can't hit any more, and that he can't endure the humiliation of having an entire season with the same results as he's had up until now.

Or, more plausible still, says that his wrist isn't healed and he needs to go on the 60 day DL.

The Red Sox would do much better to replace him with, well, almost anyone. Chris Carter. Lars Anderson may be some time away from being ready to hit in the majors. Jeff Bailey. Trade. Bring in Frank Thomas at a bargain price, if he'd sign.

Something has to happen to fix this.

Why hasn't Andruw Jones' year gotten more play here? I understand he's only a part time player, but he's still OPSing over 1.000 though mid-May.
   92. bunyon Posted: May 16, 2009 at 01:15 PM (#3181443)
No idea, flournoy. It's a hell of a comeback. I know it's early but the way he looked in spring, I'd have said he was incapable of even a week with OPS >1000.

Time to bring in Bonds.

I'll take this opportunity for a hockey hijack and say that Gary Bettman is worthless human being who deserves to suffer in the depths of hell.

Maybe he no longer deserves the name Papi.

How quickly you youngsters forget Stan Papi.
