Boston Herald: It’s all bad news for Sox

A 5-4 loss to the Orioles merely was the last down note of the day, one marked with pain and suffering on all fronts.
...
On the medical front, right fielder J.D. Drew had to leave the game in the bottom of the third with a sprained left wrist after a sliding attempt to catch a fly ball. Drew’s wrist bent back awkwardly on the play and the ball dropped in front of him, but X-rays were negative.

And not long after that, center fielder Coco Crisp could not take the field for the bottom of the sixth because he was in the clubhouse dealing with an upset stomach, the result of an excruciating headache.

If all that wasn’t bad enough, Clay Buchholz is probable - not definite - for Sunday’s game against Milwaukee because of a nail issue on his right middle finger.
...
Spotted a 3-0 lead, Beckett (4-3) gave it back in the fourth, when the Orioles scored four times, the last three coming on a Luke Scott home run with two outs.

“It was a (expletive) pitch, right down the (expletive) middle,” Beckett said. “I threw (97) pitches and I think I executed one of them. The loss definitely goes in the right person’s hands tonight.”

(beautiful), (absolute)?

Jim Johnson is really starting to catch my eye. He's like the anti-baez.

I can't believe J.D. Drew got injured.

I compared the last week of Red Sox baseball to the Husker Du song, Pink Turns to Blue.

I am pleased by any and all Husker Du references.

I can't link to it becasue it is my own blog and I'll look like a wanker...

All hail the Huskers!!

Yeah, poor f*ck*ing Red Sox. A-Rod, Posada & Hughes on the DL, the other of your kid starters in the minors sucking his thumb, two of your other starters hanging on for dear life, and one hitter in the entire starting lineup having a semblance of a normal year. Yeah, Let me tell you about a few troubles I've had....

I'd say Matsui, Damon, Cabrera and Abreu are having years that are well within the range of expectations...

Oh cry me a river. Imagine having your two best starters already spending time on the DL as well as your starting catcher, having your best offseason pitching acquisition put up a 1:1 K:BB rate, your best positional acquisition with an OPS of 558, your two best hitters slugging under .400, your setup man on the 60 day DL after getting into a bar fight, your star prospect striking out in 30% of his ABs, and nobody will show up to watch your team because you play on carpet.

Everybody has problems. The Rays just have the resilience and the gumption to stay in first that the Yankees and Red Sox lack.

They're on a one-day first place streak. The total number of days they've had sole possession of first place this year is now two.

They're a good team doing well despite having had many problems, and have earned their position in the standings. But your last statement is comical. I'm not sure if you intended to make me chuckle, but I appreciate it nonetheless.

Yes, it was a joke.

It's not obvious what can be done about this slump either. Well, apart from putting Mike Timlin, sad as it is to say, out to pasture.

Yeah, poor f*ck*ing Red Sox (followed by a litany of self-inflicted Yankee woes).

If this is going to turn into a open "woe is my team" thread, then I think everyone should step aside & give Indians and Tigers fans a wide berth. (And if someone can cockpunch the next mouthbreathing moron that says "LOL Drew got hurt," bonus.)

Not that I'm questioning the legitimacy of Crisp's injury--really, I'm not--but how does a really bad headache lead to an upset stomach? This has never happened to me.

Maybe Coco took too many Aspirin?

My wife gets massive headaches that come with pretty serious nausea. Headaches and stomach problems are often linked.

One of the symptoms of a migrane headache is nausea, not everyone gets nausea with the headache, but some do. That's all I can think of.

Migraine headache and/or adverse effect of the medication he took.

I can see how feeling really light-headed could make one nauseous.

Huh. Well, apparently I have spent all of my life blissfully ignorant of the whole migrane/nausea connection. That sounds...unpleasant.
   21. GGC won't apologize for liking the Red Sox Posted: May 14, 2008 at 09:39 AM (#2780204)
I've never had migraines. They seem to be common among smart people, but most of my headaches have been self-inflicted.
   22. Cooperstown Schtick Posted: May 14, 2008 at 09:39 AM (#2780209)
Other than Beckett, the players did not look particularly downbeat after the game.

What soldiers, marching on even when their right fielder has a sore wrist, their fourth outfielder has a headache, and their fifth starter has been downgraded to probable, all while their winning percentage falls under .575. How do they bear up under this? Amazing.
   23. Cooperstown Schtick Posted: May 14, 2008 at 09:40 AM (#2780210)
Oh, and LOL Drew got hurt. (I was told there would be punch if I said this. Yummy.)

Easy...I once got a concussion and I puked my guts out. I'm not saying Coco has a concussion, but there is a connection between the two.
