Boston Red Sox - Red Sox sit down with Boras - The Boston Globe

“I think there’s a realization in baseball that if you try to keep things the same, it will change on you anyway,” said Epstein. “Players age and players change, chemistry changes, payroll structures change. Better to be proactive and try to find the right mix for now and in the future, rather than let it happen to you.”

This better be about Gagne's punishment.

Epstein said in the afternoon that he was going to meet with Boras "to talk about [Eric] Gagné and his whole list of free agents. He's not a great fit for our bullpen right now, but I wouldn't rule anything out."
That sound you hear is the sound of Wok's head exploding. Or imploding. He's 'ploding either way.

The real news in this article regarding 3B for Boston is this:
According to major league sources, the Red Sox are willing to go three years on the 33-year-old Lowell.
And according to the Globe yesterday, Lowell would be willing to take a "hometown" discount if they guarantee three years. I'm not sure if the holdup is the difference between "go" and "guarantee", or if it's just that there's a lot of other worthwhile stuff going on right now, but it would suggest that A-Rod will not be coming to Boston, at least not as a 3B.

Also...
Epstein also said several teams have inquired about center fielder Coco Crisp's availability.
I suspect a lot of these inquiries are along the lines of bargain-shopping. I don't know how many teams are inquiring about Ellsbury, but I wouldn't expect those inquiries to be particularly fruitful.

Theo punctuates nearly everything he says with "we won't rule out anything."

Wok's head is safe. For now.

Boras's last client to opt out of a contract prior to Rodriguez was J.D. Drew, who left a five-year, $55 million deal with the Dodgers after two seasons, and signed a five-year, $70 million deal with Boston.

Thank you Mr. Boras, SIR! May I have another one, SIR!

Boras, who also represents Jason Varitek, might explore a contract extension for the 35-year-old catcher, who has one year remaining on his deal.

Now that's funny.

okay, well, this is one step closer to my prediction on a-rod.
after reading brattain's article about rodgrigues, i wouldn't sign him if i'm a gm, but hey. those guys know more than i do.
