Boston Red Sox - Sox not close on Santana - The Boston Globe

Turn out the lights sweet darlin’.

Listen to any jukebox in Music City, and you understand that this is a town where at the end of the night, shot glasses and promises tend to turn up empty.
more stories like this

It was no different this week for the Red Sox in their pursuit of Johan Santana, not that there was any evidence of Johnnie Walker Red in Theo Epstein’s suite.

The Sox were prepared to return home today without the two-time Cy Young Award winner, though the rebuff by the Minnesota Twins may be temporary. No one on either side is declaring that negotiations have come to an end; with no one other than Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner setting artificial deadlines, there is every reason to believe talks will continue in the coming weeks to determine if the sides can agree to a match.

Seriously though, on another thread I listed (in order) BA's top pitching prospects heading into 2006:

Liriano
Billingsly
Verlander
Cain
Lester
Jenks
Olsen
Zumaya
Pelfrey
Papelbon
Bailey
Hughes
Anibel Sanchez
Anthony Reyes
Mark rogers
Loewen
Adam Miller
McGowan

Seriously only 2 outright busts in the top 10... (and even they may not be done)

As someone rooting against the Yankees, this list is very reassuring. How many guys on this list threw even 150 innings in the majors last year?

Shouldn't you be concerned with how many innings they threw at all in '06 since that was the year which this list preceded? (I'm assuming you're making an injury comment, anyway here are the totals):

Liriano 121
Billingsly 160.2
Verlander 186
Cain 190.2
Lester 128
Jenks 69.2 (reliever)
Olsen 187
Zumaya 83.1 (reliever)
Pelfrey 117.2
Papelbon 68.1 (reliever)
Bailey 138.2
Hughes 146
Anibel Sanchez 200
Anthony Reyes 169.1
Mark rogers 75
Loewen 183.1
Adam Miller 158.1
McGowan 111.1

Kevin, you're a smart guy, you understand sample size. You know that, when evaluating players, you go by more than just their last 127 plate appearances. I mean, Cody Ross hit 350/423/658 over his last 120 AB last year. Gary Matthews Jr hit 192/287/350 over his last 120 AB. Let's not be silly.

As per #123, apostasy and blasphemy describe your skeptical madness to a tee. There are only three certainties in life: death, taxes, and Jacoby "Hurricane" Ellsbury.

OMFG! You listed Lester and Papelbon above Hughes!!!

You blasphemer!! You apostate!!! You, you, you...

Since I was the one who printed the original list...
I'll repeat, "this was BA's pre 2006 list"
Not mine, not some Yankee Fanboy's, BA's.

Here's their pre 2007 pitcher rankings:
DAISUKE MATSUZAKA
PHILIP HUGHES
HOMER BAILEY
ANDREW MILLER
TIM LINCECUM
YOVANI GALLARDO
MIKE PELFREY
MATT GARZA
ADAM MILLER
CLAYTON KERSHAW
FRANKLIN MORALES
SCOTT ELBERT
LUKE HOCHEVAR,
NICK ADENHART
JEFF NIEMANN
JACOB McGEE

Just to add more misery to my offseason:

Boy did the Mutts screw up on the trade window for Pelfrey.

yes, Ellsbury is really fast and will be a plus and maybe great CF

Vince Coleman says "hi".

Didn't read all the posts...(thats my qualifier)

Is Dodger stadium still playing as an extreme pitchers park?

With all the discussion above about Kemp vs. Ellsbury vs. this package vs. that package, did anyone think how good Santana would be in Dodger stadium....against NL batting and the pitchers slot 3 times a game.

Me thinks, FAR more awesome then he already is. Could someone far smarter then me, run these possible numbers?

Word is that McCourt had a lot of the foul territory replaced with luxury boxes after he bought the team, and Dodger Stadium has played as a slight hitters park since.

So, which implied comp works better?

Matt Kemp: Sam Horn
Jacoby Ellsbury: Vince Coleman

Are people really arguing with kevin about a Red Sox prospect? Really?

Defensive Stats from Baseball Analysts:

Center Field

Player Level Org IP PAA PAA/150
Jacoby Ellsbury A+/AA Bos 914 44 65
Justin Upton A Ari 918.3 32 47
Brent Johnson A+ Sea 847.3 28 45
Dustin Majewski A+/AA Tor 856 28 44
Tony Gwynn Jr. AAA Mil 812.7 26 44
Antoan Richardson A Sfg 1000.7 29 39
Chris Amador A+/AA Chw 805.7 23 39
Sam Fuld A+ Chc 734 21 38
Yordany Ramirez A+ Sdp 638.7 17 37
Matt Young A+ Atl 747 20 36

I can't wait to work out MLB equivalents for these; if Ellsbury's true talent level is even half of his 2006 PAA/150, he could be one of the best defensive centerfielders in baseball right now. It's tough to get quite so excited about Justin Upton just yet, but Diamondbacks fans who would like to see him stick in center have to be encouraged by his ranking here. Just out of the top 10 is another major prospect, Carlos Gomez of the Mets, who put together 32 PAA/150.

so ... what he's saying is, ellsbury's probably a better defender than vince coleman and shannon stewart?
