With each passing day, I suspect the Sox are getting more and more used to the idea they will have to make due in leftfield next year. If Bay gets offered a fifth year for big dollars I can’t see the Sox signing him. If Boras is really looking for Teixeira money for Holliday, I can’t see the Sox in on him either. So what do they do in that case? Pick up more bullpen depth, sign Harden, and try to put together some low risk alternatives to David Ortiz in case he doesn’t have a big rebound year. “We talked about this a lot at the end of the year, that we’re kind of in a bridge period,’’ he said. “We still think that if we push some of the right buttons, we can be competitive at the very highest levels for the next two years. But we don’t want to compromise too much of the future for that competitiveness during the bridge period, but we all don’t want to sacrifice our competitiveness during the bridge just for the future. So we’re just trying to balance both those issues.’’
That necessary talent might not come until next offseason, when the market is far better and the Sox will be shedding some major contracts (David Ortiz, Mike Lowell). They recognize that there are no major impact free agents on the market right now, no players like Mark Teixeira worthy of those big-money deals. There are such players on the trade market. But, it seems, the Sox would rather hoard their prospects.

It doesn't matter what Boras is looking for. It matters whether someone else is willing to pay that. Everyone knows Holliday isn't as good as Teixeira, but that he is a very good player. The only thing that could lead to Holliday getting Teixeira money is that there are so few impact free agents in this year's bunch. I'd say sign Bay if you can get him for about 4/70 or less - otherwise view next year as a rebuilding year, try to scrape a wild card, and sign someone like Marlon Byrd as an outfield supersub. Marcus Thames as a right-handed DH/1B/LF might not be a bad pickup either, and I'm sure he could be had for 1 year, $2 million or so.
The thing is they can't 1)hoard prospects and 2)not spend money in the FA market and still expect to 3)actually add talent. It seems very odd to previously worry about bumping up against the luxury tax threshold, but then say there aren't any "Teixeira like" free agents available worth spending on; a lot of the article reads like a subtle response to Boras.
Hmm, we've found an outlier.
I mean, the drop in slugging from Bay/Ellsbury to Ellsbury/Crisp would be pretty drastic...
OTOH... Maybe they're considering Youkilis for LF if they get A-Gon from SD? With him moving to 3B for Lowell and Ellsbury to LF/Crisp to CF on those days? I know it wasn't pretty last year the few games he played there, but I have to think if given a whole off-season to prep he'd at least be as bad as Bay out there, and I think folks could live with that--no spectacular plays, just making the routine ones.
I doubt it. There are just a handful of players who can steal enough bases at a high enough success rate to be worth more than half a win a season.
TE - Francona said something to the effect of "we won't do that again" with respect to Youk in the outfield after his debacle in New York.
I sure hope Hermida isn't the Red Sox starting LF next year. This offseason is a failure if that happens.
I suspect that Hermida, or at least a platoon involving Hermida, is Option C behind Bay and Holliday.
As a platoon part and if they get Halladay (or improve the pitching dramatically otherwise), sure.
But aren't you also on record as being favor of going as high as 5/100 for him (or am I confusing you for someone)?
