BPro: Seidman: Furcal En Fuego

Or Furcaliente…

Furcalysis

Furcal has missed the last several games with back spasms, and it comes as no surprise that the Dodgers have gone 1-4 in that span. Though Furcal’s absence cannot be directly linked to the team’s recent struggles, he has been one of the top offensive players in the league, let alone his own team. He should be back in the lineup soon, and it will be very interesting to see if his injury lingers throughout the season or has any sort of effect on his production. His offensive output may suffer from the time off as well, as a hot streak likely to regress as the season goes on may do so more quickly when it’s being resumed by a player iced by injury and/or inactivity.

Though everything still suffers from small sample size syndrome, it is definitely clear Furcal has been able to hit pitchers of all qualities and all handedness; he has also been able to produce whether ahead or behind in the count, and against any type of pitch. This may not last all year, but Furcal is currently in the midst of arguably the best stretch of his career. If the Dodgers want to be serious about contending this year, Raffy will need to be back on the field and continue to produce at an All-Star level, even if that level is slightly worse than the torrid MVP-worthy level he’s produced in the early going.

Is he going to sign a contract extension? What's the word on Chin Lung Hu? Will he play now? Ken Gurnick says the Dodgers are looking for an emergency replacement. Why? Something wrong with Hu?

I have long hoped that Furcal would be the Yankee SS next year. Given Jeter's struggles, and Furcals, and Hu's supposed ascendancy, I assumed that Furcal would be available and a serviceable place holder while the Yanks looked for their next star SS. Hu getting buried, along with Furcal's hot start have made my hopes far less likely. I hope he comes back and does nothing more than he has done the last couple of years.

He will be eligible to come off the DL on May 21.

I got into a fight over this way back when over at Neyer's board, but I should point out that in Panamanian Spanish, being "en fuego" doesn't mean you're sizzling but that you're drunk....

Hey! Furcal's done both!

Like Spike Owen, Andy Stankiewicz, Mike Gallego, Alvaro Espinoza, Rafael Santana, Wayne Tolleson, Bob Meacham...

It might be a while.

I want Furcal back in Atlanta!

Probably not going to happen, and Yunel is a ballplayer so we don;t need him too bad, but hes just so much fun to watch

The funniest thing I saw like this was in "Don't Look Back," a documentary of a 1960s Bob Dylan tour. He's in London, trying to do an interview in an apartment or hotel room or something, and some guy is stumbling around in the background yelling, "I'm so ####### pissed (drunk) !" and Dylan turns around and says, "You think you're pissed? I'm pissed (angry) !"
