Bradford: How John Smoltz Convinced The Red Sox He Was Worth A Chance

If I’m not mistaken...Good Lord Smoltzy once fought The Freakin’ Deacon in a bloody Pulpit Death Match.

The Sox’ contingent didn’t know what to expect in the 50-pitch side session, perhaps just a stream of straight balls and a subsequent physical examination. But, with his agents also looking on, Smoltz first threw a few 40-yard passes and then picked up a slew of worn baseballs he said “had a mind of their own”.

Finally came the first pitch.

“I’m standing back there ready to get this warm-up pitch,” Scherer remembered. “Then, all of a sudden, here comes this 92 mph fastball, low and away, that doesn’t touch my glove. I immediately thought, ‘I better get down now. He’s ready to go.’

“The way it came out of his hand … it shoots out of his hand. The thing I was amazed at was when he was warming up. I’ve seen him pitch a ton of times, but then I saw him warming up throwing the football back and forth and he’s launching it halfway down the field. Then he’s barely throwing the baseball and it’s coming out there at 90 mph.”

But, much to the surprise of the Red Sox observers, there weren’t just the fastballs. Along came Smoltz’s trademark slider, with the tight, late break, and some changeups and curves, for good measure. This wasn’t what any of the onlookers were expecting.

“He starts mixing in his slider, and I’m like, ‘All right, it has a nice late break and it’s hard,’” Scherer said. “But then he was like, ‘Now I’m going to throw a curveball’, and he breaks off this 12-to-6 that totally fools me. And then he starts saying we’re going to throw split-fingers, changeups, and a little of this and that. I’m like, ‘Good Lord Smoltzy, you’re ready to pitch, aren’t you?!’”

And yet, per their press conference, the Red Sox and John Smoltz expect him to return...in June.

Basically every single time Smoltz had to shut it down with Atlanta it was the same thing: outrageously good pitching -- snapping slider, exploding fastball -- followed by a DL stint because it just hurt so damn much for him to do it. This is to say that unlike so many, his injuries were not presaged by fat pitches up in the zone and serial shellackings.

Because I love the guy, I hope he is lights out for the Red Sox. Because I have seen him so much, however, I would not at all be surprised to see him throw 8 shutout innings with 16 strikeouts and then be shut down for the rest of the year immediately thereafter.

From 2005-2007 Smoltz threw 667+ innings. There has to be some chance that he bounces back somewhat healthy this season, no?

He's not there to pitch against the Royals in May. He's there to pitch in September and October.

CC - That was before, not after, a huge shoulder surgery. That Smoltz can throw his pitches is big news because he had shoulder surgery.

I do agree that this looks like spin - it sounds a lot like the Bartolo Colon stories of yesterspring.

Point taken, but it happened with the elbow (I think he had bone chips removed) in 1998 or 199 I think it was. Happened again with the Tommy John or whatever it was before 2000.

He's an amazing physical specimen, and I am very happy to see him able to pitch following surgery. I've just experienced too many instances in which I've said "thank God, Smoltz is back" only to see something new happen, seemingly out of nowhere.

Yes, but you need to win those games in May in order to pitch in October. Or is it a forgone conclusion that the Red Sox make the post season?

against the royals?

they play the royals in July and September, so they should sit smoltz for those months

Sure. The Red Sox can afford to pay him five and half million to rehab and show up after the All-Star game. Good luck with that. That doesn't make this "Good Lord, Smoltzy, you're ready to pitch" line any less ########. Per the presser yesterday the team and Smoltz are targeting June for his return. By definition, he's not "ready to pitch."

Next, the Sox will give Curt Schilling another $8m to be "ready to pitch" in September.

I hope Smoltz isn't ready by opening day, that will make a crowded 25 man roster. Here's what I have figured out for opening day for the 09 sox:

IF: Youkilis, Pedroia, Lowrie, Lowell, Lugo (5)

OF: Bay, Ellsbury, Drew, Baldelli, Kotsay (5)

DH: ortiz (1)

c: Bard, Brown (2)

SP: Beckett, Lester, Dice-K, Penny, Wake (5)

RP: Papps, Delcarmen, Lopez, Masterson, Okie, Ramirez, Saito (7)

With Masterson maybe being the 5th starter if Penny isn't healthy or if wake is in the pen. Unless they want to go with only 12 position players, and that's only if Kotsay didn't sign a guaranteed Major league deal, there is no room on the 25 for smoltz. I'd hate to see Masterson start the year in AAA along with Clay, just for Smoltz. Who else could you "send down", if there was no injuries, if smoltz is on the opening day roster?

Is Saito expected to be healthy on opening day?
Which doesn't really open a slot for Smoltz anyway, unless Wake is in the bullpen.

I'm torn. Yankee fan but man, do I love Smoltz. Great pitcher to watch work, great competitor. I'm sure I'll learn to hate him but still ...

I thought Wakefield was understood to be injured (not announced to be so, but injured nonetheless). And that Penny was likely going to start the year off on the injured list too. Am I misremembering? (I might be).

I have no idea, The sox have been signing rehabilitating pitchers like crazy this winter. I would assume that between Wake, Penny, Saito, Smoltz that 1-2 of them could start the year on the DL. That would allow the sox to keep Miguel Gonzalez (rule 5 draft), Aardsma, or Clay on the 25.

I really like that bullpen.

the way i figure, even if the top 4 starters make 30 starts each, and penny/smoltz chipped in 15 starts each, that still leaves room for 12 spot starts. there's always going to be someone on a DL stint or they'll simply option down masterson or lowrie for a spot start in case they need to keep both penny and smoltz through a rotation run while wake or beckett takes a start off.

there's always ways around it. heck, even when the 04 sox got 157 starts from their starters, they still managed to play 50 players on their active roster at one point or another. granted, there's some duplication there because of the nomar deal, but even if you take them and the sept callups out, that's still like 40 active players...
