Braun to sign 7 year deal with Brewers

By giving Braun a seven-year extension beyond this year, the Brewers would buy out Braun’s first year of free agency. Team owner Mark Attanasio said earlier this year it would make no sense to do long-term deals with any of the club’s younger stars without buying out at least a year of free agency.

Wonder what Prince’s reaction to this will be?

Since this hasn't been cited before, the year-by-year breakdown:
Braun gets a $2.3 million signing bonus, $455,000 this year, $745,000 next season, $1 million in 2010, $4 million in 2011, $6 million in 2012, $8.5 million in 2013, $10 million in 2014 and $12 million in 2015.

If he’s eligible for salary arbitration in 2010, his salaries for his arbitration-eligible years would be $3.5 million in 2010, $5.5 million in 2011, $7.5 million in 2012 and $9 million in 2013.

Brief article about insurance coverage on MLB players:
Major League Baseball does not have a league-wide insurance plan, but the Brewers do carry insurance on some players, according to Bob Quinn, the Brewers' executive vice president for finance and administration.

While declining to be specific about certain players, Quinn said, in general, pitchers were more expensive to insure than position players, and older players were more expensive than younger players.

Many major-league teams insure players who have long-term deals, such as Braun's. Most policies cover up to 75% of the contract.

As with many insurance policies, there are deductibles. And in the case of a catastrophic injury to the player, the team would be able to collect only after the deductible is paid and a certain amount of time - 60 to 90 days - has elapsed.
...
The insurance policies are normally renewed every three years, according to Quinn.

Another HR from Braun, and another, and another! That's 4 HRs since this article was posted 4 days ago. Care to amend some of the stupid comments on here people? You still have a few games.

Late to the party, but the way I look at the contract is that if Braun fulfills his potential, this will be a bargain, if he doesn't, this will not handicap the team at all, it's just not big enough. If he falls somewhere in the middle, he'll provide good value and he's locked up until his early 30s.

Granted, I was away from a computer since the signing, and in that time, Braun has had quite a stretch but I think I would have felt that way anyway. He could be Pat Burrell and this would still be a good contract IMO.
