Braves release first baseman Craig Wilson

First baseman Craig Wilson was released this morning by the Braves, who decided they couldn’t wait any longer for the slumping veteran to come around.

Manager Bobby Cox said rookie first baseman Scott Thorman will get the bulk of the playing time, but top catching prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia and utility man Chris Woodward would also play some at first base.

I thought I saw something about his asking for his release, but I can't be sure.

Either way, Craig, if you see a call on your caller ID from Arlington or Oakland, answer with caution.

Another available player who is better than Hillenbrand?

Imagine that.

Cardinals'll take him. His .563 OPS is still better than what they've gotten from their right fielders this year.

Cust should be going down any time now...

Wow. .563? I didn't realize they even made DH's who hit that well.

Our DH is only at .494.

"Wow. .563? I didn't realize they even made DH's who hit that well."

Hes also got about 25 Ks in 55 ABs or something. I was hoping this experiment would work out but oh well

Yeah, but that .563 was with the platoon advantage in most at-bats.

I wonder how Salty will do at first defensively. Hope its better than Piazza.

Free Craig Wilson!

I'm thinking there is probably a curse on underrated hitters that the Yanks have acquired. Call it the curse of Kenny Lofton or something.

That .563 would fit right in with the White Sox lineup.

Katrina Hillenbrand couldn't carry Craig Wilson's jockstrap...

I'll gouge my eyeballs out if Chris Woodhead gets any time at 1B.

Free: Craig Wilson!

I didn't see this coming, and I don't approve.

Craig will bounce back. If playing in Pittsburgh didn't break his spirit, nothing will.

"I don't approve"

Why not? He looks like toast

Damn work. More than one person has already made some sort of Free Craig Wilson crack before I had a chance.

PIT Post-Gazette: A return for Craig Wilson?
The Pirates were not among the handful of teams that contacted Steve Hilliard, Wilson's agent, in the hours after the first baseman was given his unconditional release yesterday.
...
"We'll have to see how that goes first," Hilliard said. "After that, if he's not claimed, he's available to anyone, and we're very confident he'll sign with someone very quickly."

Wilson would welcome a return to Pittsburgh. He repeated his willingness to play for the Pirates during Atlanta's visit to PNC Park last weekend, and Hilliard reiterated that.

"He's always loved it there," Hilliard said.
...
If a team claims Wilson off waivers, they would be responsible for picking up the remainder of his one-year, $2 million contract, or roughly $1.5 million.

The Braves also don't like players who express a willingness to be somewhere else. It really is pretty competetively uncomfortable for a player to tell some town's media that he'd be open to playing fo them while he's employed by the visiting team.

I'll gouge my eyeballs out if Chris Woodhead gets any time at 1B.

Since Pena was almost immediately optioned back to AAA to make room for Mark Redman, I don't expect that Salty will get much time at 1B for now.
