Bret Boone signs deal with Nats joining brother Aaron, dad Bob in D.C.

Next stop!

Bret Boone came out of retirement to sign a non-guaranteed, minor league contract with the Washington Nationals on Monday, joining his younger brother, infielder Aaron, and their father, assistant general manager Bob, with the club.

Boone, who turns 39 in April, hasn’t played in the majors since 2005, when he spent time with Seattle and Minnesota. He went to spring training with the New York Mets the next year but called it quits before playing an exhibition game.

“There’s something still in there,” Boone said Monday. “I look at it as I’ve got nothing to lose.”

...On Monday, flanked at a table by manager Manny Acta and general manager Jim Bowden during a news conference at the Nationals’ spring training stadium, and with his father standing a few feet away, Boone spoke about dealing with other off-field problems.

“I’ve just changed my way of life a little bit. I’ve always been a guy that goes out and likes to have a good time—maybe at times, too good of a time,” he said. “And that kind of all catches up to you and you’ve got to look in the mirror and find out where are you going. Where are you going with your life? Took care of some personal business, and I feel that I can give this 100 percent.”

I'm engaged in a Wikipedia war, trying to get FOX broadcaster Curt Menefee's page updated to include my favorite gaffe:

"In the 2003 MLB American League Championship Series, Yankee Aaron Boone hit a home run to win the series. In the aftermath on the field, Menefee did a quick interview with him and then turned to the camera and said: "Bret Boone, World Series Hero". By doing this, he managed to get two essential facts completely and utterly wrong in only five total words, a sportscasting record that exists to this day."

I put this passage in there in mid-December, and it got taken down by the Man on January 15.

Why do the Nationals have so many bench players on the major league roster?

Estrada, Felipe Lopez, Elijah Dukes, Willie Harris, Langerhans, Mackowiak, Aaron Boone. Plus Nick Johnson if he's healthy and Rule V'er Matt Whitney. I'd imagine most of these guys are out of options.

Does nobody ever actually retire anymore? What percentage of players who announce their retirement end up trying a pitiful comeback attempt a year or so later?

I'm surprised he didn't sign with the Orioles; don't they need a replacement for Roberts?

I'd say 80-90%.

Is Mike Piazza retired or just unable to find work?

They should sign Ray Boone while they're at it. He's probably able to contribute as much as Bret.

I'll put my money on the square labeled "pretending to be retired/holding out for more money when the real point is to avoid Spring Training."

They could sport an all former-Red infield of Young, Bret, Lopez and Aaron. And have Kearns and Pena in the outfield. Bowden sure likes his guys.

Didn't work out so bad for Michael Strahan.

It's tied by Tim McCarver's infamous comment on Brad Penny's fastball. "It's a Mark Wohlberg fastball: Catch me if you can." I think Menafee edges Tim out because the facts were more important, but I think Tim wins for sheer ridiculousness (as he always seems to do.)

Boone must have been on some crazy roids for it to have taken so long for them to get out of his system.

Does nobody ever actually retire anymore?

Retire, do steroids when immune from tests, make a comeback.

Especially in the case of Double-B, this seems quite plausible.

Then there's always McCarver's gush of how apt it was the Benito Santiago got a game winning hit on Cinco de Mayo, forgetting that Santiago is Puerto Rican....

Why do the Nationals have so many bench players on the major league roster?

They're bench players on a good team. They're starters on the Nats.
