I know there's a lot of controversy about how to handle pitchers and about counts. But I haven't seen much discussion myself about "long toss." I seem to remember a story about Gene Mauch ruining someone's arm with long toss -- although it may have been a position player.
I remember seeing "Sudden" Sam McDowell throwing as far as he could from the Yankee Stadium monuments (musta had a six-pack hidden behind Ruth's) as part of his pre-game warm ups.
