Brewers have history of waiver wire magic | MLB.com: News

It must be just as satisfying as picking up a six year-old Crown Victoria at a police auction.

Winter waiver claims often go unnoticed amid the bigger bubbles on the Hot Stove. Not in Milwaukee, where the Brewers over the years have quietly acquired some key players over the wire.

They've let a few go, too, like Marco Scutaro.

outfielder Scott Podsednik. The speedy center fielder parlayed the opportunity into a career resurgence

He does that every few years.

Very good article...I do think that hardly any teams have this amount of waiver successes.

When the Brewers claimed McGehee off waivers from the Cubs on Oct. 29, 2008, he was coming off a 92-RBI season for Chicago's Triple-A affiliate but was blocked at third base by Aramis Ramirez. He reported to Brewers camp as a long shot to make the club because the team had subsequently added veteran Mike Lamb.

What did they expect from Mike Lamb exactly? Were there any other third basemen in the organization at the time?

They expected Bill Hall to be the more or less full-time 3rd baseman but possibly need a semi-platoon partner who could hit more than Counsell, thus the signing of Lamb.

What would be an All-Star team of waiver wire pickups among active players?

Not quite an All-Star, but the Twins have gotten some very effective seasons from Matt Guerrier.

I had quite literally never heard of Casey McGehee before reading this article.

Does Kevin Millar count, give Japan's role in the situation? Of course, he's not an active major leaguer at the moment...
