Brewers: Kendall’s defensive approach gets props

It’s not exactly heartening for an ex-catcher turned manager of the Milwaukee Brewers to discuss the catching situation in his organization and throughout the other 29 organizations in the major leagues, but reality is reality.

“I don’t know what the problem is,” manager Ned Yost said recently, one of 15 former professional catchers now managing in the major leagues. “They need to do a national study on it. Catching is so thin in high school, colleges and the professional level.

“You can count on one hand the number of good young catchers in the game. They all want to go in the (batting) cage. They come offensively before they come defensively. “I tell kids that if you can play a little bit, catch.”

...Nine of the Brewers’ post-Matheny catchers have come in Yost’s five years as manager. Several, such as Estrada, Gary Bennett, Keith Osik and Eddie Perez, were one year and done. Others, such as Damian Miller and Chad Moeller, stayed a few years. Now he has added Kendall to the list with newcomer Eric Munson the expected backup.

“I think it’s because I haven’t found exactly what I’ve been looking for,” Yost said of the catchers who have marched in and out of the organization. “I know what I want, somebody who’s defensive-minded and defensive-oriented.

Sorta like Dave (1 for 21) Huppert, I guess.

“I know what I want, somebody who’s defensive-minded and defensive-oriented.

Then he's managing the wrong team.

"Catching is so thin in high school, colleges and the professional level."
I've been reading the same #### for years.
When was this wondrous time of a surplus of catchers?

“I don’t know what the problem is,” manager Ned Yost said recently, one of 15 former professional catchers now managing in the major leagues.

Really?

Catchers: Scioscia, Yost, Girardi, Torre, Melvin, Gonzalez, Geren, Maddon, Gibbons, McLaren, Leyland, Wedge, Bochy

Non-catchers: Piniella, LaRussa, Guillen, Randolph, Black, Manuel, Cooper, Acta, Mackanin, Cox, Gardenhire, Washington, Francona.

Clint Hurdle caught 22 times in 515 games.

Apparently, Dave Trembley never played pro ball.

I ain't sure who manages Pitt or KC right now. But that's 13-14 catchers for sure, depending on how you count Hurdle.

I knew there were a lot of catchers-turned-managers, but that's really something.

And judging by their predispositions as managers, we can see once again why they wore the tools of ignorance.

The Pirates manager is John Russell who was a catcher.

Trey Hillman (Royals) was an infielder, I believe.

Is Kendall even that good defensively?
   7. WXRL in Cincinnati Posted: March 24, 2008 at 12:43 AM (#2718203)
No, but what Yost means when he says he wants a defensive catcher is that he wants a catcher that sucks. I'm sure that he considers a catcher who can't hit to be a good defensive catcher, and vice versa. Ex-catcher or not, he wouldn't know a good defensive catcher from a bad one without using their batting average.

It's ridiculous to just say that with no evidence.
   9. RollingWave Posted: March 24, 2008 at 04:07 AM (#2718226)
basically this is a nice way to say that Kendall can't hit a lick anymore.

Agreed, Vaux.

WXRL, please try to be include at least a tidbit of credibility in your next irrational rant, please?

Actually, on this site, people express opinions and are more or less free to do so. And I'm especially not going to let up at the request of the resident commies.

When I saw this headline I thought the props were going to be a cartoonishly oversized catcher's mitt and a circus cannon to use to make throws for secondbase. I guess I was wrong.

Seriously, Kendall moves well and can block pitches and that has some value. He just can't hit or throw anymore.
   14. Hobo Hal Posted: March 24, 2008 at 12:35 PM (#2718486)
He's hitting about .300 in ST. That's around his career numbers. He's also thrown out a couple runners this spring as well.

Does the word 'seriously' mean 'I'm a Cubs fan'?

You know how it is in spring training: guys are testing out new slides. When the season starts, they'll go back to making Kendall look like a fool.

I can't wait to see Ichiro's new spin move!

Munson backing up Kendall. Now THERE'S a defensive tandem for ya.

Is Kendall even that good defensively?

He sucks balls. I don't think I've ever seen a worse defensive catcher in MLB. I'm a 36-year-old first baseman in a slo-pitch league with the arm to match, and I throw about as well as Kendall does.
   19. Harveys Wallbangers Posted: March 24, 2008 at 01:14 PM (#2718534)
I don't think I've ever seen a worse defensive catcher in MLB.

Good grief. You saw Estrada play and think Kendall is worse than Estrada????

Kendall is bad. Estrada is and was ghastly.
   20. (d)re(ck)tro-shiite Posted: March 24, 2008 at 01:18 PM (#2718540)
Well, I did say "I don't think I've seen a worse defensive catcher," which technically allows for Estrada being *as* bad.

Regardless of Estrada's ineptitude, Kendall's hideous.
   21. (d)re(ck)tro-shiite Posted: March 24, 2008 at 01:23 PM (#2718546)
I should say, Harvey--our perceptions are doubtless colored by my probably having watched more of Kendall than you did, and your almost certainly having watched more of Estrada than I did.

I don't imagine either of our experiences in that regard were very pleasant.

harvey,

munson is better than he used to be and i hate to tell you, he's better defensively than either kendall OR estrada
   23. Harold Posted: March 24, 2008 at 01:35 PM (#2718560)
I'm sure that he considers a catcher who can't hit to be a good defensive catcher, and vice versa.

Also known as "Nichols' Law of Catcher Defense".
