Brewers’ top scout on hot streak

An interesting profile of Milwaukee’s Vice President - Special Assistant to General Manager for Player Personnel, Jack Zduriencik.  (Title courtesy of the Brewers website).

Zduriencik has been given the credit for the Brewers positive returns in the draft including Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun, Corey Hart and Yovani Gallardo.  Also responsible for Rickie Weeks and JJ Hardy.  Once you read the article the Matt LaPorta decision makes more sense as Zduriencik drafts under the “best guy available” philosophy.

Draft day is an emotional roller-coaster, full of surprises and disappointments. In 2000, Zduriencik had Bobby Jenks' folder in his hands and was ready to take the hard-throwing pitcher, but the Chicago White Sox snatched him up one pick earlier.

Jack Z was one of the top candidates for the Pirates' GM job.

If the Brewers liked him so much, he was available on waivers at one point.

I think they probably liked him a little less at that point.

If he was selected off waivers from the Angels by the White Sox, that means the Brewers never got a chance to claim him, because the AL teams all got a chance before any of the NL teams. Unless that was not the rule at that time (December 2004).

Also, Z isn't the GM. Maybe he still liked him but Melvin didn't.

Perhaps he's better off not having gotten that job.
