Bugs and Cranks:  ‘Fro Sho’: Baseball’s Best Afros

From the O’s to Jerry O...wasn’t Ross Grimsley’s entrance song ‘Afro Twist Time (Um Gow Wow)’?

1B — Eddie Murray

As if a great ‘fro weren’t enough, Murray went ahead and provided baseball with, perhaps, the best chops of all-time as well. Take one look at Murray in the late ’70s and early ’80s and tell me he didn’t look like Jules from Pulp Fiction. Go ahead, I dare you. That’s why he was so surly with the media all those years — some reporter asked for a foot massage and he made like Caine from Kung Fu and just walked the earth.

The day I found out Oscar Gamble was going bald was a sad day.

Coco Crisp is developing a nice afro.

My connection is balky today. Does he mention Earl Weaver's perm?

Does he mention Earl Weaver's perm?

No, but Don Sutton gets a well-deserved shout.

none of them can touch Darnell Hillman

(in fact, MLB can't touch the ABA when it comes to Afros--men against the boys)

Ha, this is great, especially the Don Sutton picture. But there is no excuse for mentioning some guys and then not having photos. In fact, this is the sort of article that should be just an excuse for photos.

I would like to hear about recent candidates as well. Including those in the Indians rotation.

them were the days

Damn, jmac66, that ABA page is hilaripus. The director of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat wants that outfit back, Coach Brown.

Also, Jose Cardenal deserves a shoutout.

I loved the 'fro, 'burns and goatee of Artis Gilmore. At 7'2" and long arms, he was the most intimidating player from the 70s. The ABA was the coolest league of all time.

You know you got a big fro when it doesn't all fit in the picture.

CF — Oscar Gamble. There’s simply no comparison. It’s not even close. The owner of baseball’s greatest afro is, was, and ever shall be Oscar Charles Gamble.
This is far too limited. Gamble's fro was not only the greatest fro in the world of athletics, it was the greatest fro in the history of the known world.
Jewfro — Alex Jacob. The Jewfro Jacob was sporting at this year's WSOP vaulted the young poker player into elite Jewfro status.
As good as Alex Jacob's Jewfro was, it doesn't really compare with this one.

Jewfro - I always thought term was Isro.

That looks like a failed Sideshow Bob-do.

none of them can touch Darnell Hillman

When I attended the ABA Reunion in Indianapolis in 8/97, I paid to have Darnell autograph something like 5 vintage 8x10s showing him in all his Afro-tastic glory -- 1 to keep, of course, & 4 to give friends back in the newsroom in Little Rock.

The '97 edition of Darnell (who I think owned a car dealership or something) had quite conservative hair. So did present-day Artis Gilmore &, of course, Dr J. *sigh*

If memory serves, another of my favorite ABA players, James Silas, at least had cornrows or something.

Oscar Gamble immediately came to mind.

It's not even close.

Fro? No.

Baseball? No.

But, the greatest hairdo ever? Hell, yeah.
