BustedCoverage.com: Sports Blog of the Year Tournament

Some early Bracketology and offseason whimsy ...

In the West region….

#4 38 Pitches: The tourney’s most famous name, Curt Schilling, checks in with his extremely popular baseball blog where he tells it like it is according to the Schill. It’s hard to find a bigger name who actually writes his own material. Not many pics but you probably don’t want to see any skin on this site.

#13 BBTF Baseball Primer:

Welcome to the worst matchup of the tourney. It’s going to be nearly impossible to beat a Hall of Famer. However, you can tell your grandchildren. BBTF is yet another baseball geekfest. But they do it well. You’ll find a lively comments section here.

First of all: Are we all really sure that Schilling’s a Hall of Famer? HoM guys, care to weigh in? And second of all, we’re much, much more than a geekfest.

I think you all know what to do.

(Eds. Note - the link does have some banner ads featuring girls in swimsuits, so may be less-than-safe-for-work)

up against Schilling? Shuh. I ain't scared. We'll take him deep like he hung a splitter to Jeter.

BTF is in the lead 19-9
   4. aleskel Posted: December 17, 2007 at 04:37 PM (#2647913)
also, I think BBTF should get credit for being one of the few sites that doesn't use pictures of scantily clad women to pad our traffic stats.
   5. Dan Szymborski Posted: December 17, 2007 at 04:37 PM (#2647914)
Seems like a pretty weird list. Who did the seeding? A lot of the choices seem kinda odd.

If you, like me, are at work, you may want to turn the computer screen before clicking the above link. Luckily, I'm near the end of employment contract, so I don't care as much, but a warning would have been nice.
   7. Sean McNally Posted: December 17, 2007 at 04:39 PM (#2647916)
I have no idea - I dumb-lucked into the link from somewhere.

And if its site traffic we want, I'm sure someone has pictures of one of the Primates topless at SABR.
   8. Sean McNally Posted: December 17, 2007 at 04:40 PM (#2647917)
Sorry Fabian - didn't realize bare midriffs required a LSFW tag.

I can't believe we're seeded 13--what an insult; and why did they ship Schilling out to the West?

BBTF is yet another baseball geekfest. But they do it well.

so we're the Princeton of the blog world

(which would make Furtado Pete Carrill)
   10. McCoy Posted: December 17, 2007 at 04:43 PM (#2647920)
25-10
   11. Sean McNally Posted: December 17, 2007 at 04:44 PM (#2647922)
Schilling's RPI sucks...

The committee clearly didn't recognize the strength of our mid-major non-conference schedule. We're the George Mason of this tournament!
   12. SouthSideRyan Posted: December 17, 2007 at 04:50 PM (#2647927)
Then Dial doesn't think BBTF belongs.
   13. Pasta-diving Jeter (jmac66) Posted: December 17, 2007 at 05:49 PM (#2647978)
as of 12:50 EST, we're blowing out Schilling 55-13

Seems like a pretty weird list. Who did the seeding? A lot of the choices seem kinda odd.

The seedings are based on rankings at ballhype that are based on links between blogs

If the voting holds true then in 3 days BTF will be going up against Storming the Floor or Extra Bases if they start pulling in votes.
   15. Meatwad is on team keefe Posted: December 17, 2007 at 06:21 PM (#2648018)

we should also be credited with bringing about bullpen mechanics

When I just checked, BTF had 72 votes, or 21 more than any other West Regional site (FJM) had in its opening matchup. It's a geek uprising.

in other 1st round action, FJM is having a surprisingly tough time with Sactown Royalty (who?!), Home Run Derby is up on You Been Blinded, Hardball Times blowing out Forum Blue & Gold, Bugs & Cranks doing likewise to Bleacher Report; and #1 overall seed Deadspin having no trouble with Watchdog

hope you filled out your bracket sheets early
   20. McCoy Posted: December 17, 2007 at 07:07 PM (#2648093)
I voted sactown royalty simply because I don't like FJM.

Oh, I see why we're seeded so lowly - BallHype only counts links specifically to "http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/newsstand/". The main page is the far more popular entry point (and suprisingly, baseballprimer.com redirect is still popular).

I've never met another Primate, Lisa, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you REALLY don't want BTF to be that site.

The moneyline play here would be awesome.

Wait, so you're not against all performance enhancers? Awfully inconsistent of you.
   41. Esoteric Posted: December 17, 2007 at 10:57 PM (#2648335)
This is an incredibly stupid seeding job. Schilling's site is one of the best one-man baseball blogs on the web (certainly the best player blog), whereas BBTF isn't even a blog so much as it is a resource, news aggregator, and forum. There's no authorial voice. It makes no sense to match these two up against one another.

That said, I've declared my tribal affiliation. Count another vote for BBTF.
   42. scareduck Posted: December 17, 2007 at 10:58 PM (#2648338)
Dodger Thoughts isn't in the list. I'm not sure how much credibility I should give this contest. Not much, I found out, once I looked at what they place a premium on (i.e. T&A). Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's not what I read blogs for.

12.) Storming the Floor
4.) 38 Pitches
13.) BBTF Baseball Primer

370-151 now, another nice run to pad the lead.

Also, I broke a 229-229 tie by taking Athletics Nation over True Hoop.

I've never been to either site, but apparently the latter is affiliated with ESPN, so I felt like I had enough info to vote intelligently there.

No USS Mariner, no Dodger Thoughts, no Viva El Birdos, and no MetsBlog. Booooooo.

(regarding Fire Joe Morgan...) Very well done baseball site. Unlike all others…uses humor.

Bah. Humor and baseball blogs are a terrible combination.

I'm glad that Sactown Royalty was mentioned. I'd love to trade Golden State of Mind and a Warriors blog to be named later for Sactown Royalty.

Athletics Nation is good - but True Hoop is great (it was an ESPN acquisition, fwiw). It and kenpom.com (now part of the Prospectus family, I guess) were my two favorite basketball websites.

   62. Gambling Rent Czar Posted: December 18, 2007 at 03:38 AM (#2648473)
what about the first time he got to "First Base". Chances are he didn't get his mitts on both. sure, toss in the odd breasted woman, and it is a coin flip.
   63. Booey Posted: December 18, 2007 at 03:41 AM (#2648474)
#61 - True, in the literal sense. I haven't complained at all about any of the fake boobs I've touched...but they didn't look or feel as good as the real ones. So, in comparison, my original point (while obviously exaggerated) isn't completely innaccurate.
   64. Booey Posted: December 18, 2007 at 03:49 AM (#2648476)
#63 - Actually, the first time a girl ever put my hand on her boob, I pulled it away like I'd touched a hot stove. Cursed Mormon upbringing... :)

Since then, however...

Opening up a huge lead- 488-174 (74%-26%) now. I think I've voted three times. Mostly, I'm just upset that my site wasn't included (damn BallHype rankings; I was like 20th a couple months ago).

BBTF-TBL would be a solid Sweet 16 matchup.

I'd like to think that my group blog would be on the roster, were it not for our ill-timed bouts of no-postitis. Then again, if the dudes running the poll are clamoring for more titties with their 2nd-hand sports info, maybe it's a blessing in disguise.

Somebody find the "greatest beatdowns" thread. I think we need to list ourselves now.

In your face, Schilling! You can't deny us, we're too real for ya, we're too real for ya!

So far it's 578-186 for BBTF. Exit polls now suggest that Schilling will assuredly be so humiliated in this very meaningful competition that sportswriters will not be able to bring themselves to vote for him for the Hall of Fame!

let's not get too cocky, folks, we're still waiting on the West Coast returns, and I think there are some disputed districts in Ohio to worry about.

When does voting end? Let's just hope SOSH just doesn't spot it before then, or we might be toast.

We're actually a pretty bad matchup for Schilling - Red Sox fans are probably a disproportional chunk of BTFers, so the Red Sox fan vote gets kinda fragmented.

Indeed...our non-geek OPS+ is at least 150.

I think we're a bad matchup for Schilling because at any given time we probably have hundreds more people here (posting and lurking) than there are there. I don't imagine it's any more complex than that.

BBTF maintains its percentage lead, 593-194. And now C-SPAN 2 is reporting that there's dissension in Schilling's organization: he has fired his sys admin! Eleanor Clift is confounded!

I know Alexa rankings aren't really scientific since it's generally measuring the data of people stupid enough to install the Alexa toolbar, but I noticed they now have page rankings by country.

Entertainingly enough, BTF's best-ranking country isn't the United States.

Venezuela 12,005
United States 14,580
Thailand 23,173
New Zealand 36,858
Dominican Republic 56,361
Puerto Rico 71,554
Romania 95,643
Philippines 99,737
Panama 100,503
Canada 103,312
El Salvador 107,604
Lithuania 156,457
Greece 212,880
Japan 469,940
France 564,248
United Kingdom 707,941

We actually even get a higher pecentage of our traffic from Venezuela than Canada - 2.6% to 2.3%.

It's kinda odd really. By US rankings, there's not a lot of difference between BP (around 10,000), BTF (around 12,000) and HT (around 16,000), but the secondary countries are totally different. Both BP and HT does far better in Asia than BTF while BTF does far better in the Caribbean than the others.

and suprisingly, baseballprimer.com redirect is still popular

Not really. Brand loyalty is based in long-term memory. I still refer to the site as Primer in casual conversation and have to re-think myself in order to type "BTF" when referencing in written discussions. That's how marketing works, really, and it's doubly effective when people have the old URL baked into their shortcut/RSS feed lists.

Guilty as charged. If I'm on an unfamiliar computer I type "baseballprimer" into Google to get here. I think it may be something to do with an aversion to that newfangled ".org".

Schilling's Army has gained over 150 votes in the last hour!

It was 615 - 204

It's now 649 - 359
