Cabrera first Yankee in 14 years to hit for cycle as Yanks drop White Sox

CHICAGO—Melky Cabrera became the 15th Yankees player and their first in 14 years to hit for the cycle, leading New York to an 8-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon.

Cabrera hit a three-run homer in the second to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead, doubled in the fourth and chased Mark Buehrle (11-5) with an RBI single in the fifth. He then tripled to right leading off the ninth against Scott Linebrink, drawing a loud roar from a crowd that had showered Buehrle with cheers before his first start at home since his perfect game.

Cycles are cool and the Yanks haven’t had one in a while. Melky has a nice .353/.465 line for the year in 335 PAs and has been one of the best surprises this year for the Yanks.

I have to agree about Melky being a pleasant surprise this year.

If nothing else, he is giving good, cheap production, while (partially) platooning with Gardner.

Going forward, the Yanks OF seems to be comprised of some mixture of Melky, Gardner, Swisher, A-Jax (perhaps) and Damon (I hope the Yanks re-sign him for 2010, since they are also shedding Matsui's salary). I can live with that.

There goes Tony Fernandez' place in Yankee history.

Yankee CF this year (Melky and Gardner) have hit .283/.354/.427 with 18 steals in 24 tries this year. I am stunned at how well its turned out.

I'm going to attempt to hijack this thread to gush about Gordon Beckham. 3 hits today, including two doubles, off CC Sabathia, and he even hit the ball hard off Rivera. His line is at .311/.374/.486, and he turns 23 in September.

I have not been this excited about a Sox rookie since they called up Frank Thomas.

This is what you get when you stick with a very promising player while he struggles at age 22 and 23. I fear for having to face the Yankees with fully mature Joba and Hughes!

What, Mike Caruso didn't do it for you?

I just hope he avoids his usual September disastor (Cabrera that is), but yeah he's been awesome so far. (June none withstanding.)

And Yes , Gordan Beckham looks like the real deal. they need to move him to SS or 2B ASAP .

Beckham is quite awesome. He didn't come out of the gates like this, but I had seen him do some good things recently. I still had no idea how good his overall numbers were until they went over the lineup at the beginning of today's game on WGN and he was over .300 so I jumped online and checked out his entire line.

I was at this game today and didn't realize Cabrera had cycled until they posted it on the scoreboard. As for Beckham, he's the real thing. Good instincts at third, ball jumps off his bat, good eye, rarely fooled by breaking stuff. He's a future star, I think.

Surely you meant to say Jim Parque.

I'm glad I picked up Beckham for my fantasy team. Hardy and Callaspo were not what I was looking for in a SS.

I feel smart for saying Beckham was by far the best player I saw in the AFL game last year. I love his swing and it seems like he almost always makes hard contact -- kind of reminds me of Nomar when he was good.
