Campbell: Astros not worried about bumps in the road

That bump ain’t no bump, it’s a crater, and that crater ain’t no Judge Crater, and that Judge ain’t no Judge Hofheinz. Got that? (head swims)

Astros manager Cecil Cooper has been getting more irritable with each defeat, and there were five in a row to end the latest homestand. Some of Wade’s unpaid advisers working the talk shows and blogosphere have come to the conclusion that it’s time to blow this team to bits and start again at ground zero.

..."I’m not interested in rebuilding,” Wade has been saying since he replaced Tim Purpura as the general manager. “I’m not an advocate of that school of thought in any way, shape or form at this point.”

Wade’s two-pronged plan calls for building at the big-league level around the current nucleus. Off the radar, Astros scouts have the daunting mission of restocking a farm system that looks like one of the Dust Bowl scenes in The Grapes of Wrath.

The plan has the endorsement of team president Tal Smith. More important, the plan has the unwavering support of the man who signs the checks. McLane reaffirmed his desire to stay this course during a phone conversation with Wade on Tuesday afternoon.

“He believes the same thing that I do,” Wade said. “Talking to Drayton and Tal and Coop and everybody involved, everybody to a man feels the same way.”

"I guess I'd ask the question: Did those same people have the same feeling three weeks ago or four weeks ago about our club?" Wade said. "I guess you could find people who would say, 'I felt the same way back then when they were playing well and were a game out of first place.' "

Well yes, I thought the Astro's hot start was most unfortunate because it would allow the powers that be to wade in denial a bit longer...

The Astros are a bad team, with no reasonable expectation that they will get better with age.
Berkman is great, but he's 32 and is now a 1B, the Astros are 33-38 with him hitting .358/.443/.697

Kazmat is 32 and is average at best
Wigginton is 30, a defensive statue, and you are never going to see better than a 110 OPS+ out of him
Tejada is 34 and in decline, he's still a valuable player, bt he;'s no linger an elite player- and he will likely have to move for SS before too long- and at that point his value will plummet precipitously.
Carlos Lee, I'm coming around to MGL's POV- he's just not that valuable, a poor man's Burrell, slow slugger, bad dee, wrong side of 30, never better than a 125 or so hitter- the furture is ugly.
Michael Bourne- he might have a BABIP fluke season in him, but really, he's barely an MLB caliber 5th OF, his career will go about as ling in the MLB as Jason Tyner's did.
Hunter Pence- probably a little better than 2008, possibly nothing more than a marginal regular, at absolute best could have an Aubrey Huff kind of career.
JR Towles- might have a decent career- might not happen with Houston...
the bench- gag

This team has no present and no future, there is no reason aside form self delusion not to blow this roster up, keep those with no-trade clauses, keep Towles and a few pitchers, but get rid of the Wiggintons and Kazmats and Blums and Erstads and etc etc...
