Campbell: What if the Astros had kept Jeff Kent?

Uhh...He would have been performing death-defying no-look wheelies at the Texas Outlaw Fireworks Sprint Car Nationals?

Could Biggio have gotten to 3,000 hits — and almost certainly punched his ticket to the Hall of Fame — if Kent had stayed?

As uncomfortable as Biggio was in left field, it’s highly doubtful. I floated the scenario past some Astros insiders, who flat-out insist Biggio wouldn’t have possibly gotten to 3,000 if he couldn’t have taken refuge at second base.

In a strict baseball sense, the Astros clearly would have been better off if they’d have kept Kent. Maybe Kent, who has more home runs than any second baseman in major-league history, would have made the Astros more of a match for the White Sox in the World Series. Maybe Kent could made the difference in the 1 ½ games that separated the Astros from the eventual World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals in 2006.

And maybe not.

What we do know is that the Astros reached their first World Series and Biggio got to 3,060 hits after Kent’s departure. Is that — and Biggio’s almost certain induction into the Hall of Fame — a happy enough ending for Astros fans? How many wish they could go back in a time machine and see what would have happened if the Astros had taken their chances on Kent?

So they would have kept him in left field instead of second.

Yeah, but what if they had kept Joe Morgan or Larry Andersen. Then what?

Jeff Kent would have been happier because the Astros don't like black players.

Aricles like this are always ridiculous. It is fun, however, to compose a team of players your club never should have let go, via trade, waivers, Rule 5, etc.

Who am I kidding? That Pirates team still couldn't win the NL Central.

Moise Alou, Barry Bonds, and Brian Giles in the outfield. Aramis at third, Jay Bell at second or short, Kendall at catcher.
Tim Wakefield, Jon Lieber, Denny Neagle starting with Chris Young and Bronson Arroyo being the next generation.

Late 90's early 00's the Pirates would be a pretty darn good team.

Ohh, the scenarios here are endless. In LF/CF in 2005, the Astros played such powerhouses as Chris Burke (76 OPS+), Willy Taveras (75 OPS+), Orlando Palmeiro (101), Jason Lane (109), and Luke Scott (46) along with some Berkman (who began his transition to 1B as well). Biggio's 104 OPS+ would have played plenty with Kent at 2B. Plus the possibility of Kent taking over 1B instead of Berkman or being shifted to 3B to screw over Ensberg.

Now in 2006, you'd think things would start getting ugly, given Biggio's 84 OPS+. But that season the Astros' OF consisted of Preston Wilson (82), Taveras (74), Lane (81), Burke (96), and some Aubrey Huff (107) along with some residual Berkman and a studly Luke Scott. Again with the possibility of Kent at 1B or 3B.

It's not until 2007 that Biggio starts to hurt the team with Kent around ... and that would have been the best year for Kent to be at 3B. Or if Kent had been heavily at 1B in 2005-6, Berkman is still in the OF and maybe the Astros don't sign Carlos Lee -- so keeping Biggio and Kent would have been a huge benefit! :-)

Oddly enough, the phrase "I ate an entire one-pound bag of raisins" gets exactly one google hit.

I figured it was from the Harry Caray SNL sketches or something.

Wouldn't it be a one-pound box?

What if Harry Caray ate an entire 1-pound bag of raisins?

It would be evidence that there's no booze in the afterlife.

what? got in the way of your tongue...you know all you buttlickers look alike.
Biggio. career ops ~ 105. Put that in your crack, jack
   15. Howie Menckel Posted: July 06, 2008 at 11:08 AM (#2845359)
ok, I'll take this one

career OPS+ of 111, not ~ 105

Your assignment:
What is the average OPS+ of a C, a 2B, a CF, etc?

Compare each year for Biggio - his OPS+, vs his position

Discuss which ones are "average," which are above, and which below

Then tell us if his overall career is "average," or above or below

That awkward, embarrassed feeling you're getting is in your crack, jack
