Capital Times: Former Diff’rent Strokes star Gary Coleman to bat leadoff for Mallards

The Mallards hope to move on the bat of one leadoff man.

It’s official: Former child acting star Gary Coleman will bat Friday night for the Madison Mallards.

Vern Stenman, the general manager of the summer college baseball team, persuaded Coleman to take a turn in the batter’s box for a 7:05 p.m. Northwoods League game against Eau Claire at Warner Park.

Coleman, 40, who starred as Arnold Jackson in the 1980s sitcom “Diff’rent Strokes,” is expected to sign a contract at 6:50 p.m. and throw out the first pitch. He will then bat in the bottom of the first inning as a pinch hitter.

The Mallards are well-known throughout the baseball world for their wacky promotions and their public pursuit of Coleman, who initially intended only to sign autographs as part of the team’s season-long series of celebrity promotional appearances.

Their quest for Coleman has been tracked by ESPN News, reportedly due to heavy interest from eccentric anchor Kenny Mayne.

He's only 40? For whatever reason, I had assumed that he was much older than that. His "star" days just seem so damn long ago.

I hope he's pinch hitting for the Kid from Left Field.

For a minute there, I thought the headline said that Coleman was to bat leadoff for the Marlins.

Then I realized that couldn't be right, he'd want too much money.

And in a not-at-all preplanned stunt..

Newest Mallard Gary Coleman gets tossed for using corked bat

Before a pitch was thrown, Eau Claire Manager Dale Varsho noticed from the first-base dugout that Coleman’s bat had pine tar well past the legal limit and shouted for the attention of home plate umpire Jack Herbert. Herbert then appropriately took the bat from Coleman’s hands and laid it down beside home plate and confirmed that the amount of pine tar used was indeed illegal.

Coleman, who was mic’d during the at-bat, calmly replied to over 5,000 onlookers, “Well, can’t we just wipe it off?”

Herbert wasn’t so forgiving.

With the bat in-hand, he then noticed a black rubber stopper extending out from the top of Coleman’s bat and gave it a tug-- only to have a half-dozen “super balls” fall onto the dirt below.

That’s when the real show began. Herbert ejected Coleman saying “Looks like you're going to have a short night, you’re out a here!”

The 4’8” Coleman began leaping into the air, bumping chests with Herbert in a sight that will be talked about amongst Mallards fans for many years to come. The crowd erupted as the former child star continued to plead his case, stating that the umpire’s comment about his night being “short” was a low-blow directed at his lack of height.

Hopefully his parents weren't around to abscond with the $$.

I thought the headline said "...bat leadoff for Marlins" which wouldn't surprise me that much.
