Capozzi: Gary Carter hasn’t been shy about his interest in managing the Mets

Gary Carter...more face time than Charles Lane’s Universal Studio career.

Carter said he doesn’t plan to call Hernandez - ("If he wants to call and explain himself to me, so be it, but there’s not reason for me to talk to him,” he said.) - but he does want to call Randolph to apologize, perhaps this week

“I don’t think there’s really a need to call Willie but I will, only because that’s me,” Carter said. “Lets face it, with all the talk going on maybe this was a way to take the focus off of him.”

...If Carter has a flaw, it’s that he is so open and outspoken with the media, a trait that goes back to his playing days, maybe too much for his own good.

“I talked to (Marlins TV broadcaster) Tommy Hutton and Tommy said to me (Friday), ‘Kid, you’ve got my support. And everybody who knows you knows there was no intent. Hey, you learn from it.’ I said, ‘Boy, did I learn a lesson from this.’’”

That lesson?

“I wear my heart on my sleeve and it sometimes it gets me in trouble because I am so open and honest,” he said. “I just have to be more cautious.”

So who gets sent down for Pedro, Pelfrey or Vargas?

Here are the pertinent numbers:

Pelfrey: 2-6, 56 IP, 4.98 ERA, 29/25 k/bb, 4 hr, 1.70 WHIP, 4.65 FIP, .335 BABIP.

Vargas: 2-2, 24 IP, 4.50 ERA, 12/8 k/bb, 4 hr, 1.04 WHIP, 5.37 FIP, .186 BABIP.

Pelfrey's BABIP isn't just bad luck. He gives up a lot of line drives. He actually has pretty good control and walks more guys than his command suggests he should because he has a hard time putting guys away. Righties don't hit for any power against him while lefties smack him around. He has options.

Vargas: He is mediocre and will give the Mets a 4.75-5.25 ERA while averaging 5.5 IP/s. He has good stuff but gives up too many bombs to be better than that. The Mets could stick him in the bullpen instead of trying to send him through waivers where he'd probably get picked up.

Pelfrey, hands down.

Which is not to say that the Mets shouldn't be actively looking for a replacement for Vargas. But he's the more effective pitcher for the time being, and Pelfrey (24) is more likely to benefit from time down in AAA than Vargas (30).

If and when Carter gets a managerial job, it's going to be hard for players to contain their laughter when he tells them that there is no "i" in team.

He seems pretty clueless.

Holy Jesus. Just shut up, Gary.

That's generous.

I've known a number of a**holes who yap like this. They never do seem to understand that, in fact, they "just have to be more" aware of the balance adults apply between the need to express their own thoughts and feelings, and the needs, intelligence, and feelings of other people.

I am sure Willie will thank him the next time he sees him.

Huh? No intent? You called the Mets to tell them you were available if a change was made. Are you that stupid?

If he's such a boob, they can't hire him, right? So, therefore, there's no real intent, because there's no real chance he'd be hired.
