Cardinals Diaspora: Cardinals Front Office = Liars

“You’ve taken my life-so take my soul
that’s what you said-and I believed it all
Liar-Liar-Liar”

What are my options? Let DeWitt and co earn interest so they can ’spend’ the money in the right places or have them blow some cash on a big gamble like Silva or Tejada? Blow the dough. What’s it matter to me? We’ve already spent the cash- they’re the ones not. Who knows what will pan out or what won’t 2-3 years from now? Nobody does. So to think that this team will have a better chance at a player or players 36 months from now is not only absurd- it’s insulting- just like trying to force-feed me a pu pu platter of LaRue/Izturis/Kennedy/Ludwick up the middle on a team that features the best player in the world. And PS: We’re kind of overlooking the fact that we’re wasting the prime of the best Cardinal ever! It’s funny how much better a guy like Silva or Kudora can be when they play with the best in the world- just ask_____ (Hector Luna, Ronnie Belliard, Abraham Nunez, Jason Marquis, Jeff Weaver, Jeff Suppan, ect al.)

Midway through the off-season, many teams are making final tweaks to their roster. Filling in holes that the big pushes didn’t cover. Putting a team together that will be whittled down to 40 before it gets to 25. For Cardinal fans, the promises that were made 3 years ago, last year and this year have turned out to be lies. A spade is a spade and until we get some proof that DeWitt, Johnny Mo or any other person employed by the team is willing to make the changes necessary to elevate this business above mediocrity, than we shouldn’t relent. After all, it’s a business. And us, the customers, have been lied to long enough.

Kevin:

I'm very sorry to hear about your marriage. If nothing else, you lose all that "married to a black woman" credibility that so impressed Eraser.

The only reason it's lasted this long is the physical attraction and that won't last forever.

You know, they have PEDs that can take care of that for you.

If impressing Eraser isn't enough to keep a marriage together, what chance do the rest of us have?

I'm very sorry to hear about your marriage.

Sometime, I'll let you know what the big problems were, JC. In private sometime.

Or perhaps at an Orioles game in late May while sipping a cold one and munching some of Boog Powell's finest.

I like that Kevin's marriage appears to have broken up over the inevitable end of a physical attraction that has not yet ended.

I'd make that meetup. Are you and DMN really meeting up? How'd I miss that?
   110. kevin Posted: December 27, 2007 at 04:26 PM (#2654668)
I don't know. It was in that Bedard thread a few days ago.

Curiosity got the best of me and I blurted out we should catch an O's game together and he accepted.

And here we are.

munching some of Boog Powell's finest

To those of us unfamiliar with OPaCY traditions, this simply sounds sick and wrong. To say nothing of fattening.

We have radically different core values.
She's a Barry Bonds fan?

As for the weekday thing, Kevin, I have to come down from NJ, so that's out. May 31 should be fine if that's not Memorial Day weekend.

David--It isn't. Memorial Day's the prior weekend.

So that's it then. Saturday, May 31st.

Awesome. I'll mark the date. Day game, you say?

Don't know yet. It's TBD.
   121. pv nasby Posted: December 27, 2007 at 04:53 PM (#2654705)
Any chance you can make that May of '09? I'm not gonna be around this season, but when I'm back in Damascus, I'll make the meetup.

Debating whether to fly in that morning...

I can get you at the airport, retro.
   124. Roiding Team (Oriole Tragic) Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:04 PM (#2654714)

Jeez, that leaves me without excuse...
   125. kevin Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:05 PM (#2654715)
So the list so far:

kevin
DMN
retro
Roiding Team (Oriole Tragic)
Backlasher
AROM
GGC
sj
JC

Am I missing anyone?

Retro, you really are going to fly all the way from Chi-town for this?

Well, I'm contemplating it, at least.

Jeez, that leaves me without excuse...

Well, my best friend from college lives near Annapolis, so it's not like this'd be my ONLY motivation.

To that end--thanks for the offer of a pickup, kevin, but I'll probably end up renting a car, so I can get around the state. (If not, I may well take you up on your offer, assuming it stands.)
   127. kevin Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:11 PM (#2654720)
It stands. The rental may come in handy, though, if there a lot of other fly-ins.
   128. Sometimes it Rains (sj) Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:15 PM (#2654722)

You people want to agree on a revisit date? As in, when should we revisit this to see who is really committed?

At that point we can decide how to do tickets and stuff?
   131. retro-shiite Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:20 PM (#2654726)
130--

Good idea. I'd have to see how much time I can block off, especially if I'm using this as an opportunity to do other stuff within shouting distance of Baltimore. Anyone want to set a "drop dead date"?

Without getting into the details, BLB, it really doesn't have anything to do with me. It has everything to do with major issues my wife brought into the marriage and has failed to address.

See? This is exactly what I was talking about in #87.

#133:
I think we should shoot for something closer to the actual game date. I'd say it shouldn't be any earlier than halfway between 31 December and 31 May.

EDIT: How about March 31st? We'll need time to get tickets before all those Red Sox Nazis swallow them all up. Oh, um, present company excepted, of course.
   136. kevin Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:44 PM (#2654749)
I think we should shoot for something closer to the actual game date. I'd say it shouldn't be any earlier than halfway between 31 December and 31 May.

If you do that, though, you risk not being able to get a suffcient size block of tickets. Remember, this is a Sox game we're talking about. Most of the jerseys will be carmine. I would like to get the order in before spring training starts, to beat the stampede.
   137. Sam M. Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:50 PM (#2654754)
kevin, most sorry to hear about the personal troubles. Been there . . . . It sucks, but it also turns into something better.

The game meet-up sounds fun, but my baseballing summer calendar is already full: my usual baseball trip with my brother & uncle, and my farewell to Shea . . . . what with other professional trips planned as well, I think that will have to be it for my MLB travels. Alas.
   138. retro-shiite Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:51 PM (#2654755)
If by "before spring training starts" you mean mid-February, I should be able to handle that. (When do single-game seats go on sale, anyway? I can't imagine it's much before then.)
   139. kevin Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:53 PM (#2654758)
OK, let's say Feb 15th. How's that?
   140. Roiding Team (Oriole Tragic) Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:55 PM (#2654759)
A mid-Feb drop-dead works for me. We can't exactly start a Newsblog thread for it, so to where/whom should we RSVP?

140:

Well, we've all got Primer e-mail addies, correct?

I can't believe my quasi-flip comment on wanting to be a fly on the wall at the kevin/Nieporent summit's morphed into plans for a mega-meetup. Well done, gentlemen.
   142. retro-shiite Posted: December 27, 2007 at 05:57 PM (#2654763)

BTW...that Green Spot link makes it sound like awfully good stuff. Unfortunately, its being shipped only to Irish destinations doesn't help me much.

   159. kevin Posted: December 27, 2007 at 07:24 PM (#2654818)
Found this on a whisky blog, retro:

Green Spot (€40). A pure pot still whiskey that is almost impossible to obtain outside Ireland. Green Spot is produced for Mitchell & Son, the old Dublin wine merchants (you can find their shop on Kildare Street). It belongs to a class of whiskey that once typified the Irish style but is now sadly almost gone (the Redbreast mentioned above is also pure pot still style).

bummer.
   160. retro-shiite Posted: December 27, 2007 at 07:24 PM (#2654819)
Then again, I should probably stop at Delilah's to see if they have it, seeing's how it's the best whiskey bar in the country and all, and it's 3 miles from where I live.

a meetup between kevin and DMN? whoa. too bad i can't be there for that... but the matchup i couldn't miss is retardo and DMN. but that would be a slaughter, no question.

i'm real sorry about you and your wife not working out. but you sound like you are taking it OK.

but you know i don't think most couples stay together real too long anyhow. me and husband are almost at 8 years now and i don't know anyone our age who have stayed together that long...

kevin,

Am sorry to hear about your marriage. Hang in there. And remember, you'll always have Pedroia. ;)

You'll never be on my ignored list. Who's gonna bust my chops about this? Is it March 12 yet?

Nice to hear about your new job. I recently finished a project for a major pharma on evaluating their portfolio to respond to the government's goal of improving pandemic preparedness. We should talk sometimes, I'm sure we can figure out a way I can bribe you for the betterment of humanity.

Finally, it's a shame I can't join y'all for that game. It'd be fun. kevin would probably want to beat the snot out of me for trying to bribe him while Backlasher would be biting his tongue jonesing to say "put a Milo on him"...

Unrelated question: Why did The Man get to play 1943 and 1944, while almost every other star was trying to get revenge on the Germans for what they did to Pearl Harbor?

Musial, like other American men with dependents, was initially draft-deferred because he had a son born before the war.

My girls will be going nowhere near Darwin, if I have anything to do with it!! In fact, if they are anything like Dad the only outdoors they'll appreciate will be for cricket, the beach, baseball and golf.

Various observations:

I enjoy retro's posts.

I have minimal empathy for Cardinal fans at large. The Cardinals are the most successful NL franchise in MLB history and as a group their fans do not distinguish themselves when things don't go just SO. It is disappointing if not outright distasteful.

kevin, I am terribly sorry to hear about the marriage. Best of luck working through the situation.

Thanks for all the kind words but it isn't really necessary. This is for the best. I'm actually looking forward to being single again. I'll be able to have more time being a good father and good office mate.

levski, we're hiring in our department in '08. I think you have the background to snag something down here. The pay is pretty good and the work environment is phenomenal.

Email me your cv if you're interested.

Oh, and has Callaspo gotten out of jail yet? I bet he puts up monster numbers for Tuscon this year, so that's something you can look forward to.

I was going to give a detailed explanation of the autism spectrum, but I figured that would just prove your point.

Well played.

Oh, and congrats on the twins, Phil--they look great. And Lu's still smokin' even after carrying around two mini-Phils for 9 months. ;-)

I enjoy retro's posts.

Well, thanks (feeling's mutual), but then again, you don't root for a team against whom I have an active rooting interest, so you wouldn't have to deal with my snark. Oh, wait...

Phil, but croc hunting is about as exciting as games 4, 5, 6, 7 of the 2004 ALCS. And I have one boy, who turned 2 (years) recently. His favorite word now is "No".

kevin, I actually like my job. Been at it for almost 2 years now. And I prefer to remain in the NYC area for a while, plus we bought a house last year. But thanks. I can still send you my cv if you register on lavalife though and are interested :)

And Callaspo is out of jail... but he's with the Royals now, so am not sure he's better off ;) And no PCL inflated stats for him; he's out of options, and definitely out of Tucson. My guess is he outhits Pedroia in 2007 (as far as wives are concerned)...

Will this be on the "intimate" section?

For as many times as kevin and I've butted heads (sometimes in fairly nasty fashion), I don't recall putting him on "ignore." I believe there's only one poster who's earned that distinction.

What do I win?

No, BL, it isn't you, either.

Is that "hit" in the Julio Lugo sense, or in the Leo Durocher sense?

I bet I know who it is, and no, I'm not implying that it's me.

You're definitely correct as to the latter, repugnant though your mediocrity is.

Phil, cute pic! Hope you get an occasional good night's sleep. (Or would that be asking too much?)

Good luck rebuilding, Kevin. Change is hard, but often good. Just don't tell us you have a five-year plan. :-)

Wait--there are primates with artistic talent? Un-possible.

I thought you knew I painted oil on canvas. Its been some time since I've done it, but I'm proud enough to hang them in my apt.

I've got my dollars on that jackass Beano Cook.

kevin and Nieporent meeting at an Orioles game? Really? Maybe I should go. Is Andy going? He lives in DC.
   197. robinred Posted: December 28, 2007 at 05:19 PM (#2655636)
kevin,

Sorry about your marriage.
   198. Your Ace from Outer Space Posted: December 28, 2007 at 10:23 PM (#2655936)
So the list so far:

kevin
DMN
retro
Roiding Team (Oriole Tragic)
Backlasher
AROM
GGC
sj
JC

Am I missing anyone?

I'm sure the kevin-DMN meetup is gonna have all the grandeur of a urine test. Then again, I'm no idealist; I just think meetups are fun. So I'm in - what happens next? Do we need to plan ahead to get tickets?

BTW kevin, you say you're OK with your marriage ending... I hope so, and I wish you good luck throughout the rest of the process.
   199. kevin Posted: December 29, 2007 at 12:16 PM (#2656240)
Thanks, robin. I'll try to get Andy to come. I'm sure he'll be happy to, if he doesn't have any prior committments.

Ace, the drop-dead date is Feb 15th. At that point, we'll purchase the tickets as a group, so we can all sit together.

If push comes to shove, I'll just charge them and you all can reimburse me.

I'm in, until the 14th. At which time I will be out.
