CBS Sportsline: Power Rankings

This will give the Yankees a leg-up in the BCS race.

4. Colorado Rockies

Love the ... Depth, both afield (Seth Smith, Ryan Spilborghs, Melvin Mora) and in the bullpen (Matt Daley, Esmil Rogers). They’re the only team in the NL West with more than 18 useful human beings on its roster. Hate the ... Continued belief in the plucky magic of Clint Barmes, who’s best suited to a marginal utility role. They could’ve upgraded at second base this offseason without sacrificing much. Hell, they still can (Felipe Lopez). Quote of note: “Whoo! Yeah! Dude! Come on! Yeah!” –- Jason Giambi ... Bump them up if ...: Jeff Francis can return as even a passable bottom-rotation starter after his M.I.A. 2009.

Quote of note: "On-base percentage is a myth perpetuated by the liberal media, just like asteroids and the electric car." –- Dusty Baker.

Don't forget to tip your waitress, be here all week. Hay-o.

With one notable exception -– Edwin Encarnacion handles third base like an infant handles antique lamps –- the Jays will trot out a solid defensive team in 2010, which should allow the pitchers to put the ball over the plate without fearing for their ERAs.

Is Mr. Dobrow completely unaware of who will be manning the OF for the Jays? Between Wells, Lind, and Snider, there are going to be a lot of doubles this year.

I wouldn't mind if they found someone to replace Barmes, but Lopez is a guy who's been in four organizations in the past two years and looked like he just had his career year. I'm not sure the offensive upgrade would be worth the defensive difference between the two, and with this pitching staff, I'd rather they focus on putting an excellent defense out there.

The bigger question is who the fifth starter is going to be... This guy rates the Rockies very highly even though he considers getting anything out of Francis a bonus. I consider getting anything out of Francis a necessity.

The author of TFA has a Frankenstein haircut. And he has the Red Sox as #2, Mets 23, Jays(yikes) 29.

Unlike the vast, vast majority of these columns, this is actually worth reading. There's a chuckler in almost every team's blurb, and quite a few pretty good one-liners in there.

Marlins at 13:
Love the ...: Way they were bullied by the Players' Union into spending some cash, which resulted in a long-term deal for gargantuan ace Josh Johnson and the return of Hulk-smash second baseman Dan Uggla. It takes a special brand of cretin to make the Players' Union look like a bastion of righteousness and moral certainty; the Marlins are every bit that cretin, and then some. Hate the ...: Cheapness. The new-stadium bickering and tomfoolery. The late-afternoon cloudbursts. Take your pick. Quote of note: "We made, like, $45 million last year. What the hell do I care about an extra arm for the stretch run? I've got a caviar bathrobe." –- Jeffrey Loria.
   6. Crispix Attacks Posted: February 19, 2010 at 05:43 AM (#3463361)
Love the ...: Patience. There was nary a Pat Meares or Derek Bell among the offseason additions Hate the ...: Lack of talent on hand, even after nearly two decades of drafting in the top 10. This is inexplicable and unforgivable. Quote of note: "We're on the right path now. The last nine right paths we were on turned out to be wrong paths, but this path is right. There's a map of some sort involved, as I understand it." -– Robert Nutting. Bump them up if ...: Steve Pearce is revealed to be Albert Pujols' long-lost fraternal twin.

Nails it, pretty much.

Also, that Cardinals logo looks really odd with no red anywhere in it or around it.

Yeah. This is actually exceedingly well-written. Though of course you have to be willing to withstand the horrors of colloquial language.

It's time for me to stop trying. From here on out, I'll be replacing my Royals blurbs with commentary on current events or music reviews.

heh.

I am not saying that the Mets should be ranked much higher than they are but I have to say that I am a little surprised to see them ranked that low. That's basically assuming the Mets won't improve at all from last season.

I enjoyed this one. The rankings I don't necessarily agree with -- I think the Twins should be above the ChiSox and the Rays below third and probably the Dodgers over the Rockies, etc -- but this is that rare bird: the sportswriter who is actually funny.
