Championship Drought

When was the last time each team won a World Series Championship? Here are the answers...just for fun.

Pittsburgh Pirates - 29 years (1979)

The Pirates edged the Baltimore Orioles in seven games by hitting .323/.364/.438 as a team. Willie Stargell and Phil Garner each had 12 hits, but Stargell shined with 3 home runs, the only bombs his team would hit.

Philadelphia Phillies - 28 years (1980)

They defeated the Kansas City Royals in 6 games, where Willie Aikens had 8 hits (4 home runs) and Steve Carlton fanned 17 in 15 innings pitched.

After Pittsburgh ties Philly's streak of 16 consecutive losing seasons this year, I'll be going back to this article as I fight to keep the safety on the handgun.

I wonder why only one of the 1969 expansion teams-the Royals-have won a WS. The Pilots/Brewers, Padres, and Expos/Nationals are all laying a goose egg. They've all had their share of talented players. Of course, the Expos best shot was erased by the '94 strike.

I always forget that the Giants haven't won a WS since moving to San Francisco.

For the Nationals/Expos, they also won a pennant in the only year no postseason was held. We would have had a completely different franchise history if that team had peaked in '93 instead of '94. The Marlins or Rays would likely be playing in Washington, for example.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. Mind you, I love Montreal and the Expos, but Bud had a program to get rid of all 70s ballparks. Was Montreal going to cave in and publicaly fund a Budstrosity? If not, they'd have been moved no matter what.

It's not a long drought compared to many...but it's made worse by the fact that was their first WS.

Vaux:

There would have been a chance of getting some public financing for Labatt Park if the Expos had won made a postseason appearance or two. Everyone likes to support a winner, and the fan base would have been much stronger. Even without those, the new park project came tantalizingly close to succeeding, and it would have saved the franchise.
