Hey-hey! Cubs hit a homer with Len Kasper

Damn...and we’re stuck with Michael Kay until Danny Aiello gets ousted.

Len Kasper was a relative unknown when he replaced Chip Caray as the TV voice of the Cubs before the 2005 season. But it didn’t take long for Kasper to make a name for himself, and the Cubs rewarded him Thursday with a three-year contract extension through 2011.

...The other thing I like about Len is that he’s well in tune with the baseball stat science called “sabermetrics,” and that makes us kindred spirits. As I try to do in the Daily Herald, Len also tries to do on TV. That is, he’ll give you stats like on-base percentage and OPS (on-base plus slugging), but he’ll explain them for the casual viewer, and he won’t beat you over the head with them. Baseball is a game fans can enjoy on any level, and Len speaks to the stat head and to the casual fan alike.

When Channel 9 did its throwback telecast this past year, Len played it perfectly with his “Hey-hey” and “atta boy, Jimmy,” when Jim Edmonds hit a home run. It was priceless.

It’s also a lot of fun to talk rock music with Len, who’s up on the new stuff and the classics.

The chemistry between Len and Bob has developed into something special over the years. Let’s hope they have a lot more time together.

I don't know if I've heard him. I have watched and mostly listened to Cubs games via mlb.com and don't recall liking or disliking any announcer. Kay forces me to watch the Yanks on mute.

Good for Len. I'm very happy for him, and this is well deserved. Part of me is also glad Brenly didn't get the Brewers' managing gig.

Len and analyst Bob Brenly are hands-down the best TV duo in major-league baseball, and it isn’t even close.

I don't have EI any more, but from what I've seen in the past and in my travels, I completely agree. It's funny he mentioned the throwback game, because that day there was a lot of discussion here (maybe the game chatter, maybe the lounge) that called Len a big homer. It was funny, since he was just doing a Brickhouse tribute, but he's not that homerific usually.

I really like Len and Bob, but let's face it, anyone would seem incredible after following the Chippie era. Chippie totally ruined the playoffs for me.

This might have been my favorite moment of the season. Also, I think it was the first time I was happy to have Edmonds on the team...

OT - but from the SDUT, per rotoworld:

General manager Kevin Towers said Thursday that he plans to revisit talks with the Cubs about Jake Peavy.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, the two sides "have discussed a five-for-one deal that could involve a third team" and "the Padres like their chance of getting the Cubs' best prospect, third baseman Josh Vitters, and major leaguers such as starting pitcher Sean Marshall and reliever Kevin Hart." After shedding Khalil Greene's salary the Padres seemingly have more ability to hang onto Peavy if needed, perhaps giving them some added leverage.

Totally agree. I hope we have them both for the next 10 years, at least.

I'm surprised the deal doesn't have Pie and Cedeno as the two pieces set in stone. They aren't extraordinarily valuable but they are basically trade bait for Chicago and I think they have more value to San Diego than almost anywhere else in MLB. Cedeno could be an adequate fill-in at SS now that KG is gone and Pie's glove would have maximum value in a park like PETCO.

I'm very happy to hear this. Almost every team's announcers are ragged on by their fans but you never hear Cub fans complain about Kasper. I hope he sticks around for a very long time.

Incidentally, I would be shocked to discover that Kasper doesn't visit BBTF. In fact, I've often thought he'd be a perfect fit for the Lounge.

Agreed. I mostly stick to Ron and Pat, simply because I can cook or clean or whatever while listening to the radio, but Len and Bob are the best TV team I know. Keep it up, guys.
