And Rosenbloom with a shot at Chris “legendary Primer thread” Singleton…
No matter how badly the White Sox play this year, the radio broadcasts WSCR-AM 670-AM will at least be entertaining and interesting with Steve Stone replacing the intolerable Chris Singleton to work alongside the underrated Ed Farmer. Heard the news Tuesday on the Mike North Morning Show. Singleton apparently is going to ESPN as a “Baseball Tonight” talking head, and I’m thinking, ESPN must have a void at guys who have the speech pattern of a pinball machine. No matter. Singleton is gone and the smartest man on my radio or television is going to keep me company on a regular basis. At least until Stone buys the Cubs.

Were John Rooney still broadcasting Sox games and got paired with Stone, you'd have had one hell of a team.
Farmer has been craptastic, no doubt, but Stone should keep him on his toes. Remember, Farmer was good during his audition and blanded out as soon as he got the job.
I've enjoyed Stone in the past and look forward to being able to listen to White Sox home games on XM without putting the mute button on. Which, yes, makes them really boring. And somewhat hard to follow.
Insofar as Milo Hamilton is still broadcasting baseball games on the radio, I find this claim very hard to believe.
Do you have any evidence Farmer ever has been anything other than horrible?
Do you like the way he tells us "You're counting outs now" and then tells us you get the first one, then the second one, then the third one?
Or how about when he prefaces his incredible opinions with "I'll say this..."
Or how about whenever he comes across someone who ever set foot in Southern California, he'll recite their entire SoCal history as if we give a flip? I'm glad Jon Garland is gone from the Sox, if only so we don't have to hear about his SoCal roots for the millionth time.
"...bloop and a blast..." "...If (enter Sox player name here) hits a homer here, then the Sox are within a slam..."
yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck.
Farmio will find a way to limit Stoney's effectiveness.
I've "listened" to baseball and college football games on XM with the volume turned down. The radio display shows you the score and situation. It reminds me of the early days of the internet.
Link?
It's really surprising, now that I have been exposed to more them with more frequency, how mediocre-to-unpleasant some of the Frick Award winners really are, while truly talented broadcasters that I listened to growing up -- like Bill White and Tony Kubek -- continue to be disregarded by that particular award (although I believe Kubek made the final ballot at least once).
Ahh, the legendary thread, where the news came down that Billy Beane had acquired OBP-challenged Chris Singleton, which rocked a few people's foundations.
(there was still quite a bit of "Moneyball == OBP" at this point)
Not as legendary as I remembered, but it was one of the early 125+ threads.
Link from 2002
or there might have been another one.
I started digging too for the "Singleton Thread" I remembered, and couldn't find the one I was looking for, either. I remembered the Dudek thread you linked to.
Then again, a good number of the early-Primer threads have been lost to the sands of time, so if you can't find it, it doesn't mean it never happened :P
Thanks Furtado!
2:1 is about right
Somehow The Original Gary didn't foresee Harris scoring the winning run for the World Series champion White Sox, like the rest of us did.
Great post. It was not all that long ago actually. You still have to do this for a few college football games.
Evidence, no, I have no MP3 of Farmer being good. You'll just have to take my word for it, when Farmer was doing his live audition, he was funny and unsparing of feelings. That got him the job. Then he immediately became what you describe.
