Chicago Sun-Times: Dodger sues old classmate, alleging smear campaign

What in the name of Chester W.H. Young...is going on?

From a letter about Jayson Werth.....“He’s a deceitful, egotistical ass---- who uses his lies and professional career to sleep with young women,” one letter reads, according to the lawsuit. “I’ve spent nearly $20,000 documenting every move this sleazeball has made.”

Funny story...kind of. Doesn't this Root guy just sound like a very jealous MoFo?

In a weird conicidence, a pro athelete (hockey, not baseball) married my ex-girlfriend. I guess I didn't get the memo that I was supposed to conduct a smear campaign and spend $20,000 of my own money in a strange attempt to get her back. My bad.

A jealous mofo sits around in a bar ######## about how Jayson Werth is a skank and stole his girlfriend etc. Root sounds like a complete fukking psychopath.

Any truth to the rumor that Keitel and Olmos have signed on to play Root and Werth in the forthcoming film version?

The letters threatened to expose pictures and videotapes of Werth having sex with other woman -- one of whom was pregnant with his child, the lawsuit states.

Christ, this a major metropolitan newspaper and they can't fix the freaking grammar?

And this guy is a total loser. Everybody knows that real revenge MUST include violence and/or mayhem.

whom the writer called "Jayson Werthless."

Ah, but he is clever. You can't deny him that.

I would agree, except for this part:

Told of the claims in the lawsuit, Ken Root said: "Jesus. And my son's the one who sent these letters?"

Funny stuff.

About this part:

The letters threatened to expose pictures and videotapes of Werth having sex with other woman -- one of whom was pregnant with his child, the lawsuit states.

Could they not ding him for extortion? Or because he doesn't seem to be asking for anything in return, does that not apply?

You got to feel sorry for Jayson Werth, he gets bounced from the Orioles to the Jays, and eventually gets given to the Dodgers where he actually finally starts living upto some of his potential, then this crap starts happening.

Oh, and Joe they've now been married for eight years, I thought I'd start the smear campaign to try and get her back on her tenth anniversary. Let's make it special all around.

I liked this part:

Is there any point to that quote at all?
   14. Shredder Posted: November 16, 2004 at 10:53 AM (#968201)
Is there any point to that quote at all?

Well, I think it gives a glimpse into the guy's mental state. Often when something like this happens, you see "he's always been a little odd" or some such quote. This makes it sound like he's kind of gone off the deep end and even his family didn't know about it.

Forget the pregnancy part. It'd be news to have videotapes of a MLB player (except for Kris Benson, of course) having sex with his wife. Other women? Talk about passe . . . .

   23. Bull Pain Posted: November 16, 2004 at 11:47 AM (#968250)
The writer couldn't even get Werth's high school correct. It's Chatham Glenwood H.S. which is somewhere in the Springfield range, I believe. They won the AA state championship (the main class) in baseball the year after my senior year with Werth starring.

From my experience, I can honestly say that between 60-70% of married or engaged ballplayers under 30 are cheating on their significant others during the season. It's so common that it doesn't even seem like a big deal.

It's no excuse, but the reporter was probably thinking of the Glenbard high schools in the west suburbs of Chicago. I think they hit at least three of the compass points in the Glenbard district, maybe all four.

Ten years ago, Ryan Root was the toast of Chatham Glenbard High, a small-town hero dating a local girl and destined for big things... He wrestled at Penn State and graduated from there last year.

How can you people call Ryan a loser? He's a freakin' college graduate, on the ten year plan no less...

I agree with Bull Pain on this one. Most pro atheletes I've happened to hang out with are NHL guys, but 90% or them were complete dogs. Including one night when I was out with my girlfriend and a 4th liner from the Leafs said to her: "You know who I am right? So I know you want to f*ck me." right in front of me. She had no idea who he was, which pissed him off to no end. A few weeks later there was an article in the Star about how he was so happy that his wife just gave birth to their second child. While he was the most up front about it (going after a non-groupie) the rest of them were pretty bad too.

While living in Minnesota, the T-Wolves banned women over the age of 21 from being part of the cheerleading team because too many of the players were sleeping with them after the games (the players mostly went to a posh hotel on Hennipin Ave. after the games). It was down the street from my corporate apartment, so I used to be in there sometimes when they'd come in. Marbary was right, there isn't that many place to hang out in Minneapolis (although the Lounge is nice if you can find it).

This past summer a girl I know happens to be a huge baseball fan (and cute) and knows some of the Redsox. So we;re all at the Texas Armidillo (across from the Sky Dome) watching game 7 of the Ottawa/Toronto NHL playoffs. After the game is over, the entire bullpen (plus a few stragglers) from the BoSox roll in to see her. I took off at about 12:30 (work day and all) but the stories about a certain married Red Sox who stripped down naked and tried to have sex with a girl from behind while she was puking in the bathroom made it's way back to me the next day. To some of hte other players credit, apparently they busted in to the bathroom when they found out what he was trying to do.

Now the one common denomintor is that lotsa drinking was involved. So I'm guessing the players who go home after the game aren't causing any problems, but at huge proportion of the players you meet out are just complete and utter dogs.

That being said, I'd gladly be one of those dogs if had the talent to be a pro-ballplayer.

What do you mean, Eric? By banning women over 21, the T-Wolves made sure all the cheerleaders would be underage. They knew the players would never sleep with underage women. Problem solved.

Right? Or am I missing something here? ;-)

Nonsense. A girl under 21 is far more likely to be intimidated away from a lawsuit.

Oggman, you're so close to so much casual sex that I'm thinking twice about ever shaking hands with you.

In all seriousness, I probably would be too if I was a big leaguer. I just wouldn't get married while I was playing the field.

But I wonder how much spousal complicity there is in this. The wives, many of whom are probably ex-groupies themselves, surely must know what goes on (at least some of it.) Perhaps they tolerate it as the price of the big-league lifestyle they're living.
   45. Traderdave Posted: November 16, 2004 at 01:20 PM (#968441)

   46. retro-shiite Posted: November 16, 2004 at 01:24 PM (#968448)
So the age of consent's 21 in Minnesota? If not, that "solution" makes even less sense than it might otherwise.
   47. VG Posted: November 16, 2004 at 01:35 PM (#968471)
Maybe the T-Wolves think the problem is cheerleaders and players going out to drink together after the game. Of course, if Kevin Garnett shows up at the door, I'm pretty sure everybody in his party gets in.

The Bulls strictly prohibit cheerleaders from getting involved with players. I don't know if that's effective, but I haven't heard or read any stories about Luv-a-Bulls and players messing around. Doesn't mean that it hasn't happened.
   48. Suff Posted: November 16, 2004 at 01:49 PM (#968502)
2 things...

1 - The guy needs to stop worrying about his high school girlfriend and move on, obviously. But I can see that if he genuinely cared about this woman he would be concerned if her husband was running around on her.

2 - It makes sense that ballplayers are unfaithful. Life on the road is full of temptation for people who are not famous. When you have beautiful women throwing themselves at you all the time and most clubhouse cultures value the ability to get any woman one wants, it makes it nearly unbearable. I would hope that more than 30-40% of these men who have made commitments to their wives keep that commitment (and the temptation is no excuse for them not doing so), but I wouldn't be suprised if the numbers are close to Bull Pain's estimates. I'd be saddened, but not surprised.

Suff,
Apparently, the stalker claimed he had videotape of Werth having sex with another woman. He also wrote letters posing as a female pregnant with Werth's child.

This goes far beyond actual concern and looks like simple spite to me. I doubt he actually knows anything about the life that Mr. Werth leads. The stalker was attending college in Pennsylvania, mind you, far away from Jayson. I don't see a trace of altruism in any of his actions.
   56. Oggman Posted: November 16, 2004 at 02:34 PM (#968582)
I bet it was dirty old Terry Adams.

I think Terry was still with the Jays at this point, so no it wasn't him. I will say this, Alan Embree seemed to be a nice guy, and according to the girl who was the intended target of the bathroom rush, he was the one who stopped it. I wasn't there, so I have no idea what really happened, but the player involved was not from the pen, he was one of the stragglers.

As for the Hockey one, sure it was Mike Craig. You'd have to be a Leaf fan to know who his is. My buddy ended up playing in the same city as him in the AHL a few years later, man did he ever have some stories about that prick. Basically that guy almost ruined all the action for the other players by having such a bad rep. Kind of like all Aussies who go to England and can't get any action because all the Aussies before them have given them a bad rep.

As for the T-Wolves, yes it was because the team beleived that cheerleaders under 21 wouldn't get into bars with the players after the game. While I will agree with Vince when he says if KG show up, his entire party gets in, I never was carded like I was in Minneapolis. I was 28 at the time and had to show my ID every time I went to a bar, so maybe that was the deal.

Traderdave. It does seem that I have been close to a lot of casual sex, I really can't explain it. But I do seem to end up at parties or bars with B-list celebrities or pro atheletes a lot. I think it's because I make a good first impression and don't give a #### that they are famous (or kind of famous), I think they respect that. Whatever it is, it has let me see: a puking Baby Spice, a drunken F1 driver try to have sex with a member of the Royal Family on a couch, a pissed off Vince Carter and a goon of the Edmonton Oilers steal a beer for me and threaten to beat up anyone who tried to take it back. Ahh....my 20's were filled with good memories, foggy, but good.

Damn, I didn't know that Werth was related to Dick Schofield. He was one of my favorite Angels for a while.

I have a friend who did sports reporting in Springfield, IL, around the time Werth was drafted. He said the reason Werth was taken so high was definitely because of his family's ties to MLB, not because of his talent. Of course, I never pressed him for any details, so who knows if there's any truth to that.

I was never quite sure what the hell the Orioles were thinking taking a highschool catcher that high, especially one from a rural area that really didn't see that much competition.

I find this hard to believe, since Werth is just about the ultimate "tools" player -- he's 6'5", strong as a bull, has a good arm, and is very fast (his mom and sister are track stars).

He also hit .652 his senior year of high school and averaged a homer every other game.

No ####, when? I graduated from there in '97.

One the on hand Werth is the player I come closest too actively disliking.

What's wrong with Werth? I love the way the guy plays. Like Mickey Hatcher, but with talent.

Speaking of athletes sleeping around, a college friend of mine used to work at the Hyatt hotel in downtown Phoenix from 1993 to 1995. He used to tell me the craziest stories about Valley athletes (for the most part, members of the Suns); Sir Charles Barkley used to have a suite at the Hyatt after every home game, and he'd bring up a random girl there after games. The Hyatt had a private elevator for him (and other choice clients). At least Sir Charles was a generous tipper to the hotel staff, unlike, let's say, Kevin Johnson, who aside from being a total ass was also a total cheap bastard.

No, I went to Notre Dame in Niles. I knew about the Glenbards mostly because I worked at the Daily Herald for six years. At one time, I also knew the general phone numbers for about 25 police and fire departments in Cook and Lake counties. Occupational hazards.

I'm wondering why someone would hate Werth so much. He's not very talkative or outspoken.

But what a wonderful example the Christies set for all of us who have, or aspire to, a chaste relationship.

I have to say, after reading that article, I won't be at all surprised to pick up a paper one day and read about the Christie murder-suicide. I don't know what special talents his wife possesses, but they really must be something for him to put up with all of her ####.

certain married Red Sox who stripped down naked and tried to have sex with a girl from behind while she was puking in the bathroom made it's way back to me the next day.

It was todd Jones in a moment of gender-identity confusion.

Even the scrubs try to pick up girls and get laid as often as possible. Rob Ducey picked up a female housemate of mine back when he was with the Blue Jays and they were in Boston on a road trip. He must've been pretty loaded, 'cause she wasn't all that great to look at. :)

"What's wrong with Werth"
I have nothing aganist the way he plays, and I'm sure many many players are worst but... he acts like an ass when he is on the field. He flicks off fans , spits in fans direction, argues with them, makes other obsense getures and takes bows and such, all round ###### behavoir.
   81. kevin Posted: November 16, 2004 at 03:34 PM (#968710)
Wade Boggs was the biggest dog you ever saw. I know of a guy who said he was a bar and the girl Boggs was talking to (of course, Boggs was married at the time) started talking to him instead. After she went to the restroom, Boggs sidled over to the guy and told him "Hey man, get lost. You're mowing my lawn".

When you're on a baseball field and you spit, aren't you just about always spitting in a fan's direction?

I sorta surprised we haven't seen more HIV among pro athletes. Magic, Wiggins, any others?

This goes far beyond actual concern and looks like simple spite to me. I doubt he actually knows anything about the life that Mr. Werth leads. The stalker was attending college in Pennsylvania, mind you, far away from Jayson. I don't see a trace of altruism in any of his actions.

I really wasn't trying to say this guy was normal or altruistic. I'm really not sure what my point was, exactly.

As for the Doug Christie link, this goes back to what I was saying about the difficulty of being faithful in their position. You guys all read it as his wife being controlling, but it seems to be something that they came up with together. In extreme situations, it's just smart to take extreme precautions to avoid any hint of sexual immorality. I'd say a lot of that is over the top, but it's more admirable than creepy, I would say.

Back in the first Reagan administration. Go Red Rams. That is tres wierd, daddy.

I worked at the Daily Herald for six years.

One of my buds is an illustrator there. Man, its a small world I limit myself to.

No, and when you flip off the fans yell at them and then do that jumping spit thing where you move toward them as you spit, it's not regualr spitting on the field. Ofcourse it's even worst if as your doing it the spit ends up landing in your fugly beard.

Glenn Burke. And I wonder if there might be some others who had/have it but didn't disclose it publicly.

I have to say, I think a lot of it is more creepy than admirable. The showing he loves her stuff is fine, didn't Jeff someone (played for the Jazz) used to do that too? But the stuff about a different locker room is odd and the female reporter thing is just insulting to both Doug and any woman in sports reporting

FWIW, there is no state where the AOC (age of consent) is higher than 18. All states are from 16 and 18 (basically). In Minnesota it is 16. I have my doubts as to whether that story about limiting the age of the Cheerleaders is true. If it is, it appears to be a stupid idea...
   90. Traderdave Posted: November 16, 2004 at 04:01 PM (#968785)
If you read the linked page on chastity belts, it is filled w/ stories from woman who use them to control their mates as a form of BDSM.

Things that make you go hmmmmmm......

You have to remember that in L.A., Milton Bradley patrols RF, so Jayson Werth could pretty much commit a string of murders on the field and we wouldn't notice.

From my experience, I can honestly say that between 60-70% of married or engaged ballplayers under 30 are cheating on their significant others during the season. It's so common that it doesn't even seem like a big deal.

Seriously. What qualifies someone to make that statement?

I spent 4 years working in the minor leagues, 3 with Triple-A teams. I was about the same age as most Triple-A level guys that aren't major prospects, so I often would end up at similar nightlife establishments as the players in a a very nice city to meet attractive young women (Chapel Hill). I also wrote their bios for the media guide and talked to them regularly, so I knew who was married and who wasn't. The older (30+) players were faithful, having probably gone through the craziness of their younger years and with a few kids to let them know what life was about. The mid-20's guys were out of control. Of the 30 or so players in that age range who I knew were married or close to it, I can only say that 5 were definitely faithful. I can say for sure that about half of them weren't, and were very open about it, with specific stories from friends or female staff members to prove it. I know of two guys who spent all of last year in the majors who I knew in 2002 and 2003, who were extremely unfaithful to their wives, and weren't the least afraid to tell me about their recent conquests. The remaining players were definitely doing questionable things, but I don't think that they were actually "cheating." But they easily could have been doing it under the radar.

I'm not one to judge these guys, because I can't fairly say I wouldn't do the same thing if I were a sort of rich, good-looking ballplayer, but when you can handpick 5 guys from a team as "good guys" because they don't cheat on their wives, it's a problem. I have no doubt that all the young, single ballplayers this side of J.D. Drew, are chalking up Wilt Chamberlain-like numbers. It's a good profession, I wish I wasn't an average sized Jew with a dead arm.

Hornacek. I think he used to brush his cheek or something as a sign to his kids. Jason Kidd does something similar. (Blows kisses to his wife?)

Then there's Adrian Dantley, who used to cradle and caress the ball in both hands. That might have just been a fetish.
