Chicago Tribune blog: Edmonds at odds with La Russa

The first volley of the Cubs-Cardinals showdown was sent Friday afternoon at Busch Stadium when Jim Edmonds ripped former manager Tony La Russa for suggesting Edmonds wanted to bury his Cardinals past.

La Russa had told a newspaper he was disturbed by Edmonds’ comments to Chicago reporters that he wanted to be accepted as a Cub, asking them to stop associating him with the Cardinals.

“I think we ought to follow his lead,” La Russa said… “So I would treat him like he never played here. I would wait until the end of his career and I would remember he was a Cardinal. I would ignore the fact that he was ever here because that’s what he wants. I would honor his request. Forget the Cardinal days until his career his over.”

Edmonds responded Friday afternoon by calling the comments “asinine” and “ridiculous.”

“For someone to say I don’t want to be affiliated with the Cardinals couldn’t be further from the truth, and could be the most asinine thing I ever heard,” Edmonds said. “I was just trying to be respectful to the situation and respectful to the organization I’m in now.”
...
La Russa told the media he would shake Edmonds hand if he sees him. When told of that, Edmonds replied: “He’s a (sissy) if he doesn’t.”

La Russa is such a prick.

Tony hitting the bottle again?

La Russa is totally in the wrong here. Edmonds was merely offering the standard line about "I'm a [new team] guy now, I'm playing hard as I can for them." Something which might be particularly relevant with a guy who was a star for the Cubs' biggest rival. WTF would Tony have had him say?

Just TLR the psychologist doing a number on Jimbo.

I don't think he cares what anybody thinks of him as long as his team wins. If Edmonds was coming to town as a Padre batting a buck ninety, he wouldn't have said anything.

why is it always "psychological gamesmanship" when certain people (tony larussa, ozzie guillen) are a$$holes?
maybe it's the same for schilling, mariotti, plaschke...

Was Edmonds in the half-shirt when he delivered the “He’s a (sissy) if he doesn’t" line?

“He’s a (sissy) if he doesn’t.”

(Forget) that.

Because in this situation he has a legitimate chance of damaging his divisional rival by maybe making one of its players feel guilty or something. Hey, it's worth a shot, if it makes Edmonds feel like he's betraying his former friends by helping the Cubs beat the Cardinals.

Yeah, La Russa loves these dumb, little mind games that have no apparent cost to the team, except making him look like a jerk.

When a person is that sensitive to real or imagined slights, it's a sign of paranoia.

Edmonds 0-fer tonight with 3 Ks.

If Plaschke and Mariotti's jobs are to piss us off so we won't read newspapers, it's working.

Other than Billy Martin, is there a manager who has developed more feuds with players than Tony LaRussa? Ozzie Smith. Scott Rolen. Now Jim Edmonds. I'm sure that I'm missing several other names from that list.

Ruben Sierra baby!

Ron Gant.

It's a little early to put this in the same class as Ozzie or Rolen.

Most of the guys who develop full-scale feuds with TLR don't last that long.

But even though the Sierra "village idiot" bit goes back to the A's, I think he's really taken it to a new level the last couple of years. He's beyond just being ornery. He's bought himself a free pass by getting this Cards team to play well. I don't know how much credit he deserves, but he's gonna get almost all of it. If it weren't for that he may be wearing out his welcome.

You win over 2400 games, five pennants and two WS and you've bought yourself a lifetime free pass... as long as you don't get caught in bed with a live boy or dead girl.
   18. McCoy Posted: July 04, 2008 at 11:06 PM (#2844053)
So a dead boy is acceptable?

Oh and . . .

Dumbest move ever!!! Ever!!

The crowd didn't seem to listen to either LaRussa (or the STL Post-Dispatch, which took the LaRussa line); Edmonds did get a good ovation his first AB.

Actually, you haven't. An organization that blindly believes that is in for a steep fall.

Some drunks get more jovial and affable others get nasty. TLR? I think we know.

agreed, but as long as he keeps winning, he gets a pass.
