Chicago Tribune: Cedeno backs up talk in win over Mets (RR)

“[Ronny] Cedeno, what a nice couple of days he has had here against the Mets,” manager Lou Piniella said. “A grand slam home run, the (RBI double) he hit down the right-field line and (Monday’s) big two-out hit. As long as he doesn’t talk ‘World Series,’ I’m happy.”

Piniella was referring to Cedeno’s comment from Monday night, when the shy shortstop from Venezuela casually mentioned the Cubs were “thinking about the World Series.” By Tuesday afternoon, Cedeno was backing off.

“I’m taking it back,” he said with a smile. “I was going too fast. I was so happy with last night, so I was talking about the World Series. It’s very early. We’re doing great. We have to keep going and play hard.”
...
With a 14-6 record, the Cubs are off to their best start since 1975, when Jim Marshall was manager and the rotation consisted of Bill Bonham, Rick Reuschel, Ray Burris and Steve Stone. That ‘75 team was 28-21 and in first-place on June 5, but went 47-66 the rest of the way to finish in a tie for fifth place in the NL East.

Seriously, this is one of the most amazing baseball moments for me that wasn't attatched to a late-inning rally or a late season/postseason victory. Cedeno has been a major whipping boy for years, and to see him get a curtain call like that? I'm still trying to process it.

The Cubs have won four straight games by six or more runs.

Last time they did that? August 1886.

Just watched it on MLB.com. Made me smile. I also saw Pie's homer from last night. Nice couple of days for the kids.

Did you hear that or figure it out yourself, Chris? Either way, cool find.

Probably used Play Index.

It's not so much the difficulty of the task, but the thought to look and the result it provided.

Except that PI only goes back to the start of the Retrosheet era (1956 currently).

Looked it up using b-ref schedules (all those ++++ or --- markers in the right margin really helped). Obviously, if I knew I'd have to go that far back, I wouldn't have started looked. ("I'll just have to look to the Durocher Cubs . . . well since I'm halfway to the Homer in the Gloamin' . . . let's see if under McCarthy . . . hell, it's just a little more to 116 wins .. . then I stopped for the time being. . . then went back to it.

I have no idea how using PI would help with that one.

They came close a bunch of times, but never quite 4 in a row like these last few days.

My favorite stretch - Cubs in June, 1930:

July 1 - 16-4
July 3 - 15-2
July 4 - 18-10
July 5 - 10-7
July 6 - 13-0

I wonder who picked up the most RBIs that week . . . .
