Chicago Tribune: Chicago Cubs remain confident a trade involving Milton Bradley will be consummated

Now that crunch time has arrived, Hendry is finding it difficult to deal the mercurial outfielder unless the Cubs take on almost all of the remaining $21 million on his contract.

The stalemate could go on for a while, though the Cubs remain confident a trade will be consummated before long.

Sources outside the organization insist the best bet remains a deal with the Rays involving Pat Burrell, whom the Cubs would try to deal elsewhere, possibly to the Blue Jays for prospects.

A three-way deal discussed last month in which the Cubs would send Burrell to the Mets for second baseman Luis Castillo appears dead because the Mets aren’t interested in Burrell, who is better suited as a DH.

Rumors that the Royals and Mets are interested in Bradley proved to be false, leading to speculation it’s either Tampa Bay or bust.

Hendry spoke to five or six clubs about trade possibilities Monday on the opening day of the winter meetings. But if the Rays are the only serious suitor, they could wait out the Cubs, hoping new owner Tom Ricketts will eventually decide that eating the bulk of the contract is preferable to another year of distractions.

I have zero idea why the Blue Jays would make that deal, because with Lind and Snider, they have enough corner outfielders who can't really defend well. I suppose they could DH him, but it would seem like such a waste.

rumour has it the new Gm here in Toronto is not sold on Lind as a fielder and wants to move him to DH and pick up a veteran etc etc. Burrell has been mentioned in the rumour pages but who knows?

I can understand wanting to DH Lind, but with Wells' declining range, you'd think that they'd want someone with some defensive skills.

As I said this is the Toronto rumour mill which sukeths in a class that may be unknown to you ( it's Canadian eh?) and before I heard of this here proposed ficticious trade Bradleys name was mentioned as apparently someone they looked at and wouldn't touch and Burrell was mentioned by a couple of writers as a good fit here IF the jays could somehow unload either Wells or Overbay or both.

I live in Toronto (well, suburbia), but I've studiously ignored the Toronto sportswriters for five years or so. It just seems like the Jays trading anything for Burrell would be odd. They're not going to unload Wells any time soon. Overbay, sure, but I thought that the plan in that case was to move Lind to first. With Rios gone the Jays could really use a plus defender in the outfield, and that certainly isn't Pat.

I concur it would be a bad move but I don't know what the new Gms agenda really is, nothing I have read suggests what his plan is other than they need a catcher.

Alex Anthopoulos' agenda, as near as I can tell:

Step One: recruit a team of super-scouts with attitude.

Step Two: trade Halladay and Overbay.

Step Three: Win. Finish third or fourth in the AL East, collect revenue sharing moneys, blame finish on JP Ricciardi's poor building of the farm system, try to give Brian Sabean enough roofies to have him take on Vernon Wells' contract.

Step Four: Win. Finish third or fourth in the AL East, blame finish on JP Ricciardi's poor building of the farm system, try to give Bud Selig enough roofies or prostitutes to make his last act as commissioner of baseball a radical realignment which sees the Jays play in a division with Washington, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City.

Step Five: Win. Finish third or fourth in the newly minted International League Central, blame finish on JP Ricciardi's poor building of the farm system, attempt to buoy attendance by having Ricky Romero change his name to Roy Halladay, hope that no-one notices.

He has done the scouting thing, but they are sending mixed messages on Halladay lately both the club and Roy himself so not sure how thats going to play out. Overbay is done but I have to wonder if the Jays haven't low balled what they can get for him by being so open about wanting shut of him ( the old "will take any reasonable offer" issue)...if this kid is as smart as they say step 4 will be "blame Riccardi as often and as vocally as possible.

Well, the Yankees do have bad contracts to swap (Kei Igawa) and a opening at DH (sort of)

Hendry and Piniella spend half of the summer fuming and openly complaining about Bradley, and look, no one is interested in him, even at pennies on the dollar. That's a shocker.

Chicago Trib blog:
he Cubs are moving closer to dealing outfielder Milton Bradley, sources said, though nothing is imminent. Still,a deal could come by Wednesday, the final full day of the winter meetings.

Asked if a deal could be done today, general manager Jim Hendry said: "I'm always hopeful. I don't know."

Another team source said he doesn't expect a deal to come down tonight.

Tampa Bay still appears to be the likeliest scenario, though a Rays source denied they were "close" to a deal. Texas may still be in the mix, though team sources suggest it would only be if the Cubs paid almost the entire freight. The New York Mets are not interested in Bradley, contrary to rumors, but are trying to unload Luis Castillo on the Cubs.

If there is a mystery team involved in the long-running Bradley rumor mill, it has yet to emerge.

I remain confident my affair involving Grace Park will be consummated

I'd take Bradley on the Mets for someone fungible. Honestly, how could it be any worse than last year? I'm all about upside.

To trade, or not to trade: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous behavior,
Or to take arms against a sea of tantrums,
And by dealing end them? To bargain: to trade;
No more; and by a trade to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That fans are heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd.
