Chicago Tribune: Cubs’ Pie out 3-5 days (RR)

Centerfielder Felix Pie will undergo surgery on Monday to correct a personal problem and miss 3-5 days, manager Lou Piniella announced before the Cubs-Brewers game.

Pie is suffering from what’s called testicular torsion, or, in layman’s terms, a twisted testicle. It happened early in camp, but Pie had the problem reduced manually, sources said, and was able to continue playing. He was scheduled to have the corrective surgery on the Cubs off-day next Monday, but when Pie reported to camp with soreness Monday, the Cubs decided to get the procedure done today.

The surgery involves sewing the outer layer of the testicle to the scrotum wall. The Cubs said it was a minor procedure, and if the problem was not corrected soon, Pie would risk losing the testicle.

I don’t think I can really add anything to this one.

They could have just said he sprained his ankle. Or had jury duty.

This part could have been left out, too:
but Pie had the problem reduced manually,

That's what got Jesse Levis in trouble.

Twisticle! It actually has to be reduced (meaning here, untwisted) pretty quickly or you can lose blood supply. Sounds like there's some continued complication after that happened and not a recurrence.

I think a lot of fellows were reduced just reading about it.

Have journalists lost all decency? First we have to read about Matsui's butt, now Pie's testicles?

Won't somebody please think of the children...

Dear Advertisers,

I am disgusted with the way old people are depicted on television. We are not all vibrant, fun-loving,sex-maniacs. Many of us are bitter, resentful individuals who remember the good old days when entertainment was bland and innofensive. The following is a list of words I never want to hear on television again:

Bra
Horny
Family Jewels

My wife and I are both laughing at that. Although she says to tell the rest of you "they wouldn't think it was funny if it happened to them!"

The Trib article linked to Wikipedia, unsurprisingly. From the Wikipedia link:
If treated within 6 hours, there is nearly a 100% chance of saving the testicle. Within 12 hours this rate decreases to 70%, within 24 hours is 20%, and after 24 hours the rate approaches 0. Once the testicle is dead it must be removed to prevent gangrenous infection.

A simple and minor surgery will correct and prevent testicular torsion. It can be done in an emergency situation after determination that the testicle is cut off from blood supply or as an outpatient procedure for patients who have experienced frequent episodes with testicular torsion.

Never want to read "testicle" and "dead" in the same sentence.

When did camp start, 2 weeks ago? That grape is ready to become a 2008 Pinot Noir

An article like this may well have saved my testicle and my son. I'm awful glad they are reporting about this. 23 years ago, I read an article in the Lifetime section of the Ft. Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. I was 15 and having intermittent pain in my testicle that I was too embarrassed to mention. After reading the article, I had the courage to tell my parents. It self corrected on that occasion, but the next summer, as an exchange student in Norway, it recurred. Yes, it hurt like hell. I knew to go to a doctor and called a friend of the family I was living with. I told them my balls hurt and I needed to go to the hospital. The doctor dawdled until I yelled at her that it was a f'ing torsion and I needed surgery. I'll be forever grateful for that article and my love of the comics. Imagine how many young baseball fans will read this. Its not really that uncommon and if it makes one kid less embarrassed and willing to tell an adult then this article will have done so much more good than the average sports article.

Glad to share that little bit of discomfort with everyone.

Maybe not at the moment, but I would definitely be making fun of myself within a couple of days after resolution.

Too bad he's not Canadian...as in, "It hurts down where I Pie."

I think Repoz once roadied for the "Dead Testicles" in the "height" of the punk era.
