Chicago Tribune: Masur leaving WGN radio booth (RR)

[Andy] Masur, who spent the last eight years on Cubs broadcasts, including five seasons doing one-half inning of play-by-play during Pat Hughes’ breaks, agreed to a two-year deal with an option for 2009 to serve as play-by-play and color man on Padres’ radio broadcasts.

Masur will join veteran Padres announcers Jerry Coleman and Ted Leitner in the booth and do up to three innings of play-by-play and six innings of color, plus pregame interviews.

“I paid my dues, (so) it’s good to get a chance to prove myself,” Masur said. “I definitely will miss Chicago and Pat and Ron (Santo) and all the fans, but sometimes you have to go where the opportunity takes you.”

WGN has not announced a replacement for Masur, who gave in-game updates, did pregame interviews and served as Santo’s right-hand man on the road.

Good luck Andy. He always sounded very professional.

At one of the 2003 playoff games (I forget which), I sat next to his girlfriend. Nice gal. I always liked his broadcasts too and am not at all surprised that he got his own gig.

San Diego papers report that this will be a 2 inning per game position, rather than the more usual three. But he'll be doing pre and post, and have a leg up on the real no. 2 job once Coleman retires.

Scott Graham and Jerry Trupiano were both left out in the cold on this one in favor of the much less qualified Masur precisely for that reason: teams simply want to go as cheap as possible on broadcasters these days, a very disturbing trend. It's especially disturbing when people say that they don't care who's broadcasting the game as long as they can hear it; for some of us--and we're apparently a dying breed--who's broadcasting the game very significantly affects our enjoyment of it. That having been said, Masur seems decent and San Diego fans will find him a nice antedote for their seven >gulp< innings of Ted Leitner.

I thought this might be about Kurt Masur. Actually, I hoped it was. Listening to him do play-by-play for baseball would pretty much make me die of laughter, but die happy.
