Chicago White Sox down Cleveland Indians, 6-3

Perez, who joined the team Monday from St. Louis in exchange for Mark DeRosa, took the mound in the ninth with the Indians trailing, 2-0. In rapid fashion, he hit Alexei Ramirez in the head, Jermaine Dye in the hand and walked Jim Thome to load the bases.

Paul Konerko popped out to second, and A.J. Pierzynski sent a grounder between first and second that Ryan Garko stopped with a dive. Garko, from his knees, threw to second to force Thome, but Perez was late getting off the mound, and shortstop Luis Valbuena had to hold the ball at second because first base was uncovered as pinch runner Jayson Nix scored.

Chris Getz followed with a run-scoring double to bring in Dye. Then Perez threw a wild pitch to score Pierzynski and send Getz to third. Finally, Gordon Beckham singled home Getz as Perez was removed.

That was one of the worst single-inning pitching performances that I've ever seen, at least without giving up a home run.

Two outs, 2 HBPs, a walk, a wild pitch, two hits, four runs. And a fielding gaffe by the pitcher, as well.

Perez wasn't late getting off the mound, he stayed on the mound. Valbuena's double take was priceless.

That was one of the funniest pitching performances I've ever seen. He'll fit right in with the rest of Cleveland's bullpen.

I'd agree, except that the Ramirez beaning was pretty scary.

From the description, it sounds like Yakety Sax should have been playing in the background.

That was something. A perfect storm of a pitcher with high velocity and movement, way amped up by his first appearence with his new team, and no idea where the ball was going. No thanks. Reminded me of little league ball when you had to hit against the big fat kid.

Should have hit Thome, too. Save three pitches.

FWIW DeRosa is 0-for-7 and the Cardinals 0-2 as they've been outscored 16-2 since he's arrived.

Excellent. HW (Brewers fan) and my (Cubs fan) secret plan of talking up DeRosa as one of the more valuable players in the game has worked perfectly.

I just watched this half-inning on MLB.TV. Excellent stuff. The Cleveland crowd's enthusiasm matches that of the fans in the first half-hour of Major League.

Clearly, Perez had no idea where the balls that hit Ramirez and Dye were going. Nonetheless, I wonder if Ozzie's code says you have to respond when 2 guys take it high and tight.

Guillen's actually been pretty mellow about this this year.

I am outraged to find out that I was little more than a pawn in these larger machinations.

But you played your role beautifully.

Some day you can play big boy games..........

Yep, that's pretty much the level of excitement for Indians baseball right now. It's difficult to get pumped up to watch the worst team in the league go through the motions because they're contractually obligated to show up at the ballpark.
