Cincinnati Enquirer/Fay: Please don’t mortgage future

Friday night’s loss was one of those games that make it hard – no, impossible – to stick to the old it’s-one-of-162 adage.

It was a very ugly ending to what could have been a very uplifting night for the home team.

My thoughts on the 7-4 loss to the great Albert Pujols: The killer was Arthur Rhodes walking Jarrett Hoffpauir, who was making his major league debut, on four pitches; I might have used Francisco Cordero to pitch to Pujols.

But what I took mostly out of the game had nothing to do with the outcome. Sure it would have been nice for the Reds to win. But as David Weathers pointed out, you don’t win the division on July 3. However, you can make decisions that affect the organization long term.

And it would be foolish right now to trade Homer Bailey or any of the other top arms to rent a bat for less than three months.

There’s sentiment among fans and pundits that the Reds need to make a big splash of a trade.

I wouldn’t if it meant giving up Bailey or Zach Stewart, the third-round draft pick from last year who has zipped through the minors.

Why? I don’t think this team is a Matt Holliday away from making the playoffs.

I don't know about that--research clearly shows that there has NEVER been a good ballplayer named Homer

Homer Simpson was pretty good in "Homer at the Bat".

Maybe it's no good Homers. They're allowed to have one.

I think that trading Bailey to rent a bat would be fine, albeit mostly because I don't think Bailey's ever going to amount to much.

Maybe they can trade Bailey for Jermaine Dye. :-)

For a Cardinals fan, Friday was a have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too affair, winning the game while making Homer Bailey look good enough to justify a bunch more starts.

If Bailey ever turns 12 years old between the ears he might have a chance

It's one start, but the first where he effectively used his new splitter after learning it from a teammate in Louisville. I'm willing to give him somewhat of a pass on last year bc the Reds tried to make him a sinkerballer. That damage took a few months to undo, but in June he was dominating again in Louisville. I'm not predicting greatness yet but it was very encouraging.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Reds promoted Stewart to AAA. He's pitched exactly twice in a week, for one inning each time, sitting six days between outings. Cincy has been handling Stewart with kid gloves all along, from what I can see. In Carolina, he was on a *much* shorter leash than the other starters. Perhaps the promotion - and spotting him out of the pen - is designed to limit his innings, or maybe he's hurting too (like about half of the Mudcat pitching staff).
