What gives? The Reds look like they have a pretty talented roster.
The pitching, which is probably the Reds' best in my lifetime (I'm 29) is being wasted by the utterly pathetic offense. It's sickening to watch this team try to score runs, because they can't. I refuse to blame Dusty; what's he supposed to do?
Falling out of love with Willy "0 for June" Taveras might be a start.
Try it, you'll like it. :-)
Seriously, it's pretty much impossible for us to know how much of this roster is Jocketty's fault and how much is Baker's ... but it looks like a stereotypical Baker roster. The acquisition of Taveras, putting him and Gonzalez at the top of the order at times, Hairston getting lots of time (and overvalued during the offseason), Gomes (who might be able to hit a little) buried on the bench until recently, Jay Bruce isn't improving, Cueto's being pushed pretty hard and Volquez is walking everyone in the ballpark.
In Baker's 4 years with the Cubs, they were 14th, 14th, 16th and 16th in walks on offense. On the pitching side, they were 16th, 9th, 16th and 16th in walks allowed. It is pretty clear the man doesn't understand the value of a walk.
The 2007 Reds were 6th in walks taken and 2nd in walks allowed. Last year the Reds were 8th in walks on both sides of the ball. This year they are 12th and 11th. They're a Dusty Baker team.
Baker has his positives. He's not a bad manager.
the Cubs for June are 225/297/350 with 35 runs in 11 games. Fortunately, we've only given up 32 in those 11 games so we're staying afloat.
But, yes, the Reds have been worse. For June: 194/273/291 ... but have still managed 40 runs in 13 games. They've given up 50.
Huh. I would say "Baker has his positives, but he's a bad manager." I guess it depends on your definition. He's not Tony Muser or anything, but he's got to be in the lower quarter of current managers.
Go back in time and not help run Adam Dunn out of town?
Nah, that's clearly Marty Brenneman's fault.
Go back in time and kill Marty Brenneman?
Post 11 is more accurage. Dusty LIKED Adam. And Dunn seemed to be ok with Dusty as manager.
But Marty and Co. hated Dunn with the passion of a thousand burning suns.
Even the guys people like me thought got screwed out of playing time thanks to Dusty's proclivities for lesser options never really said a negative word against him.
Of course, I'm a card-carrying member of "glad he's gone" gang in Chicago - but after Don Baylor hosted a bus driving school on the backs of his players, he was the right manager for the job.
His greatest strength always becomes his greatest weakness... I think we've always wrongly claimed Baker has a predilection for veterans - it's not, I think its loyalty to "his guys". It becomes a problem when "his guys" are players like Neifi Perez - and Wily Taveras.
There's also a line where the "us against the world" closeness he can knit in a clubhouse becomes a whiny shop of children worrying about everyone EXCEPT the team they're playing on a given day, as during the final months of his Cubs regime.
