Colletti walks line between baseball genius and scapegoat

I keep a close watch on this...Angel Berroa!?..of mine.

Should they lose this series, Colletti’s job security will become a topic of discussion again, which seems to be the least of his worries.

“My relationship with ownership, I think, is very solid,” Colletti said in a lengthy interview with The Chronicle before the NLCS. “I talk to Jamie all the time. I talk to Frank all the time. I didn’t have that feeling” of being in trouble.

..."As far as I’m concerned, I don’t have a worry,” Colletti said. “I don’t want to lose the opportunity I have, but I’ll have other chances if this doesn’t work out.”

In fact, Colletti might be the only man in Los Angeles who believes the Ramirez deal alone did not win the division. He insisted the acquisitions of shortstop Angel Berroa and third baseman Casey Blake were equally important, stabilizing an infield that had gone through four shortstops and featured a wobbly-kneed second baseman.

I've praised the Berroa acquisition here before - it was a nice instance of acquiring someone to fill a need for essentially nothing. Pity it's about the only instance of that in Colletti's three seasons as Dodgers' GM. About the only trade prior to that that worked out well for the Dodgers was the trade for Ethier - and that involved trading two major leaguers who had worn out their welcome for a guy that Logan White stressed to Colletti should be obtained if available.

Even if the Dodgers win the WS, I look forward to Colletti being replaced by Logan White. I suspect McCourt is tired of huge contracts for free agents that don't produce.

If Colletti truly believes this, and he's kept on for next season and given authority to make these kinds of decisions, it should be another laugh-out-loud, two-thumbs-up comedy blockbuster coming out of Hollywood this offseason.

If Colletti truly believes this

I don't think he truly believes that - he just wanted to point out that he made more than one right decision all season. Too much was given up for Blake, but he did perform for the Dodgers. Berroa was basically free, but after a horrendous start (still better than Hu at the plate) he actually played well enough to justify a major league utility spot next season - and if he can play like he did after the ASG next season, he wouldn't be the worst starting shortstop in the majors (though definitely a liability).

Colletti deserves thanks for salvaging the season, and firing for making the moves that got the team into such a hole to begin.

Colletti deserves a laurel, and hardy handshake.

Between Furcal, Lowe, Kent, Nomar, and Penny I count 49 million coming off the books. Of course, they need to replace those guys, and may try to resign Lowe or Fucal. Any idea what the Dodgers are projecting for payroll next year? I think because of the recession teams are going to be cutting back. It's a bad year to be a FA, contracts will be down. It's probably a good year for teams to take a chance on that extra year though for free agents that are under 30.

Anyway, the Dodgers can seemingly afford to sign Manny for 4/80 and CC for 6/120, and they would still have a little extra to plug a hole or two for 2009, assuming they back loaded those contracts. GO FOR IT NED!!

OK ... for a goat, he's pretty smart.

He didn't stick with Andy LaRoche as his 3b in a pennant race, as so many were clamoring for him to do, which is to be praised.
