Columbus Dispatch: 3 Ohio U. players linked to gambling

What in the name of Bet-A-Million Butler University is going on!

Yesterday, OU’s 20-year baseball coach sadly acknowledged that three of his players apparently did not heed his advice or OU and NCAA prohibitions against sports gambling.

Andrew Shisila, 22, a senior pitcher from Mentor, was charged with accepting pro-sports wagers while two unnamed players suspected of placing bets were suspended from the team.

Brent DeCoster, 22, a former player and current OU student from Westlake, also was charged with bookmaking, a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by six months in jail.

...Mark DeCoster, Brent DeCoster’s father, said the charges are overblown. He said the case involves friends making “friendly” $10 or $20 wagers, including on a fantasy football league. His son will plead not guilty, he said.

As an Ohio U. alumnus, I am ... mildly interested. Mike Schmidt went to OU, and, from time to time, they have a very good baseball team.

The often sad fortune of the football team, however, can be explained by their Division I ranking by Sports Illustrated some years ago:

#107: Akron U. -- Looking forward to its game against Ohio U. on October 10.
#108: Ohio U. -- Looking forward to its game against Akron U. on October 10.

Those were, of course, the bottom two slots in the rankings.

Must have been the Gerry Faust era at Akron. I can't wait until they build that new stadium on campus. That will be fun.

I can't believe they're making a big deal about this. Just have 'em do some homework in Frank Solich's office and all will be forgiven.

Can professional baseball players play fantasy baseball for money?

Huh. Pete Rose was a role model, after all.

"Andrew Shisila, 22, a senior pitcher from Mentor"

For shizzle, dizzle.

I wondered why the line in that Ohio U-Eastern Michigan baseball game had so much late movement. It was like a Russian tennis match. No longer am I going to be betting my paycheck on Bobcat baseball.

What, no Claude Rains quote yet? Our movie buffs are slipping.

Hey! what's wrong with the Rubber Bowl?

I played many a game there in HS

(and it was a dump even then, more than 40 years ago)

Wasn't it Claude Rains who first said "For shizzle, dizzle"?

How long until we can legally bet on sports over the net in the US?

I set the over/under at 2015 - with the govt. taxing each bet and selling franchises to Fortune 500 companies, like Harrahs, and Sands Corporation, and McDonalds.

How long until we can legally bet on sports over the net in the US?

Some states explicitly prohibit internet (as well as other forms of) gambling. However...

According to Professor I. Nelson Rose, one of the world's leading gambling law authorities: "no United States federal statute or regulation explicitly prohibits Internet gambling, either domestically or abroad."

Rose is one of the premier experts on all forms of "gambling and the law."

The only federal statute that directly addresses "internet" sports betting is the Interstate Wire Act of 1961. At least one circuit court opinion held that the Wire Act was NOT meant to apply to casual (those who do not do so as a business) gamblers, even if they bet large sums of money, and that therefore it is NOT illegal (federally) to wager on sports on the internet.

Other interpretations include the notion that the Wire Act is not meant to apply to any "bettors" per se, only to the bookmakers.

In any case, as far as I know, in 46 or 47 years, there has NEVER been a federal prosecution of any "bettors" - only bookmakers.

So the law is muddy in the area of internet sports betting. Many people think that it is clearly illegal. It is not.

And the Gambling ENforcement Act of 2006 has NOTHING to do with betting. Only how gambling sites may or may not be funded (basically, no U.S. businesses may conduct financial transactions with overseas gambling entities).
