Craig Biggio to become head baseball coach at St. Thomas

Until they move him to another position…

Craig Biggio will be named head baseball coach at St. Thomas High School on Tuesday, multiple people close to the situation have told the Chronicle.

Biggio, who retired following last season after 20 seasons with the Astros, was an assistant baseball and football coach this school year at St. Thomas, where his oldest son Conor is a student and football and baseball player.

Dude, it's got to suck to be a high-school baseball coach and have Craig Biggio volunteer to be your assistant. I mean, of course you want him, but next thing you know...

It'd be like being a trainer and having Pasteur volunteer a few hours a week.

"Listen up, the most important thing is this: Do not be afraid of the ball. Anyone who dares jump out of the way of a ball is both a wuss and a sissy."

I'm sure he would have more fun being a baseball coach in St. Thomas.

Seriously? If I was a Hall of Famer I'd be hesitant to tarnish my reputation by coaching high school kids.

Judging by his helmet, he wasn't afraid of anything tarnished.

It's an awesome opportunity for some of the better kids to land a college scholarship that otherwise might get overlooked. I'm sure there are quite a few college recruiters who would make a special trip just for a chance to converse with a future HOFer.

The only way this could tarnish Biggio's reputation is if he does things with high school kids other than coach them.

What a nice story.

My first thought: the lucky bastard gets to play a kid's game for one team his whole career, then gets to coach in St. Thomas thereafter. Lucky bastard.

I'm picturing a Happy-Gilmore-esque batting cage drill for this team.

So he's giving up his Astros' front office gig?

BTW, the University of St. Thomas in Houston's (are they affiliated?) Rothko Chapel is one of the strangest and most beaautiful rooms I've ever been in.
