Crosscut: Van Dyk: The M’s need a smarter management team

There is a core there which should be maintained but several expensive, waning players who should be traded or dumped outrightly, post haste.

Your heart goes out to McLaren, who has surrounded himself this season with what is perhaps the major leagues’ best coaching staff. He clearly is earnest and hardworking but probably more suited to being Lou Piniella’s No. 2, which he was for many years, than a premium leader in his own right. His awkward silences and explanations, during the team’s slow start, have been painful.

Bavasi comes on strong and leaves an impression of knowledgeability. But his track record, regrettably, indicates a lack of judgment about player talent and value. If someone has to go, and there is justice, Bavasi should walk the plank before McLaren.

In the end, of course, responsibility comes down to the people who own the Mariners and constitute the team’s senior management. So long as fans keep coming in large numbers, they are unlikely to take any decision action toward change. But if fans decide to spend their discretionary income elsewhere, stuff will happen.

Jose Lopez is becoming a truly good hitter....you mean the one who’s BA (.315) is higher than his OBP (.313)?

I thought the fans were *not* showing up to the games. The M's are averaging just over 26,000 fans a game, which is 6,000 off the pace of last season. The M's have not had a season in which they averaged fans in the 20,000 range since 1995. If I am not mistaken, this is also the highest their payroll has been.

Third baseman Adrian Beltre is an all-star fielder and all-around professional although he has never learned to bunt

Ichiro Suzuki in center is a brilliant fielder and hitter although he still refuses to bunt and appears not to understand situational hitting

Why this obsession with bunting?

Jose Lopez has eight sacrifice flies already. That's a lot.

Smarter than Bill Bavasi? Does such a creature exist?

They just need to pay their players more clams.

Okay, I'll cop to some Ichiro-fan annoyance. What the hell is that supposed to mean? Opposing teams hate seeing Ichiro up with men on base. Does this guy want more sac bunts and productive outs or something?

Because old, white reporters grew up in the 60's, and there was tons of bunting back then. They still haven't realized bunting sucks.

Rather amazingly, Lopez's .315/.313/.424 line is good for a 107 OPS+. The AL is insane this year.

Was it you that pointed out that Mark Ellis has a 103 OPS+ with a .242/.328/.379 line?

It's like 1992 out there!

Some people really like to harp on things that they claim are counter-intuitive. This gives them the opportunity to appear smart, or, at the least, they can tell people how smart they are.

In reality, very few things are counter-intuitive. Almost always, things follow a logical progression.

Being a fan of the bunt means they get to feel smart, and lord their fandom over the yahoo in the bleachers who is just waiting to catch a 3 run homer.

Well, when bunting you are "sacrificing" yourself for the good of the team. It's good and noble, sets a good example for all of the kids watching you play, etc.

But...what are you actually sacrificing? The team gets charged with an out, but the batter (at least according to his batting average) isn't.

Ergo, bunting is the most selfish, me-oriented thing a batter can do.

I thought "all" Japanese players were thoroughly drilled in the funamentals -- and let me tell ya, that hurts.

Anyway, bunting for hits would have been something good for Ichiro to have in his game, given his speed. Of course I shouldn't take the writers word for it that Ichiro can't/doesn't bunt.

And not that you expect much out of them, but it is dumbfounding that this team would hold onto Vidro, Cairo and Bloomquist over Wilkerson and Norton.

Who knew Vidro was only 33?

No, what's really dumbfounding is that one team that fancies itself a contender has to decide which of that dreck to keep and be regular players.

You're sacrificing a chance at a counting stat, which does matter come MVP and contract time. There's also the risk of hitting into a FC or DP, no chance at an XBH, and a higher than usual chance of ROE, and none of those work to the batter's favor.

It takes a special talent to do that, Repoz.
