Steve Gilbert adds the details: LHP Scott Maine and INF Ryne White.

-- MWE

EDIT: Maine's got a chance to help in the pen. White's filler, a 1B without power.

Scott Maine could be a useful reliever. Ryne White looks like a 1B with no power. Looks like a salary dump.

Now that he's no longer "too important to the bullpen" to become a starter, are we allowed to put him in the rotation now? I really think he is best suited to be there.

I've only heard of three people named "Ryne" in my life, and all three of them were baseball players.

Duren. Sandberg. ??

I think the answer is in this thread.

also Rhyne Hughes, a 1B in the Orioles' system :-)

To get even more obscure, Ryne Intlekofer, an infielder at Notre Dame.

Heilman was considered a non-tender candidate in some quarters - Maine's not a bad return.

Kind of a weird trade for the DBacks. It's not as if they're just one mediocre reliever away from contention.

Sandberg was named after Duren. I wonder if White was named after Sandberg?
   18. zonk  Posted: November 19, 2009 at 05:39 PM (#3391821)
Heh...

Everyone wants Heilman until they get him and watch him pitch.

Agreed on the good riddance... If Maine can be a passable LOOGY, this is a win.

I do have to admit, when I saw the headline -- I was sort of hoping they were getting Chris Young back. I knew that certainly wouldn't be the case, but he's really crashed, the DBacks don't seem particularly interested in him, and while it's not an albatross, who wants to pay a 4th OF/AAA starter 5 mil for another 3 seasons?

If the Ricketts would be willing to gamble, I wouldn't have minded seeing if Young could be fixed. He plays a strong CF, and you could do a lot worse for 4th OFers. If the Cubs fall apart, they could have also given him an extended shot at CF.

I suppose his contract is a bit much for such a crapshoot, and the Cubs' history 'fixing' hitters isn't very good... but still.

He was born in Chicago in 1986, so he was either named after him or named in spite of him.

Five other Rynes who played in the minor leagues this year show up on bb-ref. Two more played in 2008.

For a long time, I thought that Chris Young would be the first young player that Ken Williams would regret trading away. So far, I've been very wrong about that.

I don't think the D'backs have any interest in getting rid of Chris Young. His hot September probably moved him back into this year's starting lineup.

Is it just me or do the D-Backs have a tendency to acquire players that Levski has hated on? Livan, Gotay, and Heilman jump out at me.

If Heilman is going to put up walk rates like he has the two years, good luck. If he can get back to his previous career norms, he could be Borowskiesque.

But yeah, good riddance.

So, does that make him a latter day Mickey Tettleton?

Heilman is throwing just as hard, if not harder, than he did when he was successful. Fangraphs has his average fastball at 90 MPH in 2005 and it was all the way up to 93 in 2008. I don't know how much of that is due to the fact that he made some starts in 2005 but it's just odd to see that.

Ryne White looks like a 1B with no power.
So while he may be a Ryne, he's actually a Mark Grace.

He was born in Chicago in 1986, so he was either named after him or named in spite of him.
Had he been born on the South Side, would he have been named Harold?
   30. SteveM.  Posted: November 19, 2009 at 07:11 PM (#3391903)
I named my son Ryne. I wanted to name my daughter Grace but was overruled by the ex-wife. If we had one more son, I was going to vote for Shawon.

His velocity's fine; he just has zero command. I think the "Marmol without all the K's" description is apt.

After a season of Heilman, I don't care how hard he throws or what kind of stuff he has. The man just simply sucks. An unscientific answer for sure, but truthful never the less.

BTW, if you ever get a chance to watch Heilman shag balls in the OF, I recommend it, a buddy of mine and I still giggle about it to this day.

With enough luck, all three of them will be on the Dbacks 25 man roster next year.
And the Dbacks will trade Justin Upton for Angel Pagan and Bernazard's battle-tested T-shirt.

Some karmic payback? The world is fair!
You obviously don't know the meaning of the word karma.

Btw, I never hated Gotay or Heilman. I just mocked Mets fans who thought they were the Mets next superstar players.
If I had a dime for every time someone here wrote "Ruben Gotay, the amazing Mets second baseman of the future".
Or a penny for the thousands of words wasted by Mets fans arguing that Heilman would be a good starter.
Livan... eh, why beat a dead horse. He was a lot better with the Dbacks than he was with the Mets.

Chris Young didn't finish that far from being an average CF with the bat this year.

And Heilman doesn't seem to be a bad gamble.

Actually, I also know what Heilman brings to the table. I've had Mets fans repeat it to me hundreds of times over the years. In the end, I'll probably enjoy it as much as I like a root canal. In the end, I don't really have a problem with this move per se. Depth for the bullpen at fairly reasonable cost. As Steve Gilbert pointed out on his blog, Heilman may end up being a type B free agent and the Dbacks might even get a draft pick in the end. But I sure hope the team adds another reliever, via trade or free agency - hopefully a guy with a bit more upside too.

It's really sad Mets fans have to go all the way back to the El Duque trade to find an Omar Minaya move worth celebrating.
