Cubs expected to sign Edmonds

The Cubs appear poised to sign veteran center fielder Jim Edmonds soon after he clears waivers Wednesday.

That would mean a demotion to the minors for touted prospect Felix Pie, who entered Monday with a .222 average and strikeouts in one-third of his plate appearances. The lefty-hitting Edmonds and right-handed Reed Johnson would share center-field duties.

Does it mean nothing to them that the team with the worst record in baseball saw no use for him? This is ####### retarded.

Even in braindead-sportswriter-ese it makes no sense to bring up Pie's Ks. Considering Edmonds Ks a ton.

This is just a horrible, horrible move on just about every level.

Do I have permission to gripe about this now? It doesn't mean I'm not happy about the many things the Cubs have done well this year. Honest.

What #1 said. The Cubs lead the National League in runs scored. Why can't they just throw Pie out there, let him play his Gold-Glove caliber defense, bat him 8th, and let the rest of the team worry about the offense? Oh, and Pie has a higher batting average (.222 - .178), OBP (.286 - .265), and slugging percentage (.286 - .233) than Edmonds this season anyway.

Wonderful.

The Cubs hereby take the title of "last to realize that Edmonds cannot play CF anymore".
   9. AROM wants you off his lawn Posted: May 13, 2008 at 01:00 PM (#2778957)
His defensive statistics are not horrible, but in the few games I've seen I was shocked at how slow Edmonds looked and the poor jumps he was getting. I don't think he can catch anything that is not a routine flyout, kinda like Steve Finley in 2005. I would not sign him for any amount of money. Stick a fork in him.
   10. Robert in Redondo Posted: May 13, 2008 at 01:00 PM (#2778956)
He's going to need a blousey uniform to hide the fork sticking out of his back.

Edit: AROM is too quick for me.

Mike Murphy's poll question today on WSCR is "Jim Edmonds: Yes or No?" Right now it's 0-1, but the only voter so far has been John Dewan.
   14. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 13, 2008 at 01:38 PM (#2779007)
So how long does it take for the Cubs to realize they've made a mistake? Lou's not really the kind to sit by and let a player stink up the joint for longer than necessary. I can't see Edmonds being much better than awful. Regardless, he's going to need to hit about .500 for the Wrigley faithful not to turn on him. If you made up a list of players you'd never expect to see in a Cubs uniform, Edmonds would have a high place on the list.

As a Cardinal fan, I heartily endorse the Cubs signing of Jimmy Baseball. I hope they play him everyday.

Of course, against the Cards in the teams' next three game set he'll go 5-9 with 3 bombs and 5 walks. You heard it here first.

Because he's not over 33! Geez, it takes some experience to win.
   26. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 13, 2008 at 02:36 PM (#2779075)
It's clear no one here thinks this solves the Cubs' problem of their lack of another lefty bat. But that raises the question: is it really a problem for the Cubs? They're atop the bigs in runs scored, so I fail to see how their lack of another lefty is or will be detrimental to their offensive success.

This is a classic Cub move, though. Win or lose, the organization seems determined to do two things:

1) Stunt the development of young talent, namely its few position prospects
2) Acquire has-beens seemingly on the basis that they used to be good

I'm more bothered by the first part. It's tough to clearly remember when I wasn't hearing about how this Felix Pie kid was going to be the next great young Cub. At first, his age and need for development was the chronic reason for his tenure in the minors. I didn't object. It's easy to say he still isn't ready, but at what point do you let him work out the kinks at the big league level? He has to learn eventually and I see no better time than now, when he's part of a team that is piling up runs with or without his bat. Like someone said earlier, why not just let him do his thing offensively and give you gold-glove caliber defense?

I don't doubt they make the move. But I think it's reasonable to expect a very short leash to be put on Edmonds. Anyone with half a brain sees he's near the end of his career and his current stats aren't merely a case of a slow start. This is the type of move other, more rational organizations make when their starter, backup, and ballboy all go down. It's embarrassing that the Major League-leading run scorers feel this move is a necessity.

At this point, isn't Edmonds a pretty big step down from Pie defensively?

It will reduce his early counting stats, but I think Pie still has a greater than 50% chance.

   31. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: May 13, 2008 at 03:01 PM (#2779099)
Absolutely. Pie, in his limited amount of playing time this year, has made plays Edmonds was so renowned for at his peak.
   32. scareduck Posted: May 13, 2008 at 03:23 PM (#2779110)
Well, this certainly provides a counterexample for Tim Marchman's thesis on Friday. Primates discussed this earlier, if you care to recall this; oddly, the name Hendry did not once appear in the thread. Maybe now it will.

   36. Walt Davis Posted: May 13, 2008 at 04:01 PM (#2779147)
The Edmonds experiment will probably be short-lived.

But this, along with their continuing to play Johnson as he tanked,
is a pretty clear indication the Cubs don't expect Pie to contribute
much this year. Which means they'll continue to see CF as a major
problem. Which means they'll have to trade for an established CF ...
which means there's a very good chance Pie is gone.

Fortunately I don't think Hendry is dumb enough to take on
Sarge Jr's or Pierre's contracts and nobody's rushing for Andruw
Jones. Coco Crisp is a possibility of course.

No kidding. I've got tickets for tonight, so I was about to be annoyed the game had started already.

OTOH, I've got some stuff to do around the house, too, so if you could clue me in as to the final score,
perhaps I could save a few hours.

To be fair, they were quickest to see the possibilities of Jim Edmonds as a middle infielder.
   42. Justin Zeth Posted: May 13, 2008 at 04:35 PM (#2779181)
You have to ask the same question about Pie we've been asking about Matt Murton for so long:
If indeed, as appears obvious, the Cubs have no intention of giving Pie a real chance, now
or ever, why are they so bent on jerking him around and wrecking his trade value, then
eventually getting rid of him? If you're going this far out of your way to not
let the guy play, you should unload him while he's still a semi-hot prospect, not keep
him and ruin his trade value.

Retro, I'll bet the first time Edmonds hits one of his trademark, majestic upper-cut-driven blasts over the Sheffield wall you'll forgot all about how douchey Jim Edmonds is.

Provided it's not preceded by too many weeks of feeble strike-three waves at sweeping breaking balls 18 inches outside and awkward lunges/desperate stabs at fly balls that he should have gotten to if only he could get a decent break like he used to.
   49. baseball chick, now with lousy baseball team Posted: May 13, 2008 at 04:48 PM (#2779197)
AROM is dead on.

as for his bat, he can't do anything with a good FB. and the only pitch he got a good swing on was a 69 MPH curve from oswalt that he sent 330' into the crawford boxes. 2 years ago, that would have gone into the CF restaurant

- but i am REALLY relieved that it's the cubs and not my astros. FORTUNATELY, bourn is wade's pet, so he will get at least half a year...

yup, a douchometer. from 0 to Garvey.
with unit of measurements being Bush, Rumsfeld, Bonds, Canseco, Condies, Clemens, O'Reillys, Hannity , and just below a Garvey, is a Cheney.

Because by wrecking his trade value and holding on to him long enough they reduce the odds that
some other team will give him a full shot as well-
thereby reducing the odds of being proven wrong.
   56. retro-shiite Posted: May 13, 2008 at 04:58 PM (#2779213)
Edmonds hit about the least impressive home run I've ever seen off Lilly last year--it, as much as any strikeout,
was what convinced me his bat speed was gone. Fastball down the middle, about 87 MPH, and Edmonds
just got around on it enough to pop it the opposite way, high into a stiff R-L crosswind, before it settled into
the first row close to the leftfield line.

4 or 5 years ago, he'd've hit that ball onto Sheffield.
   57. retro-shiite Posted: May 13, 2008 at 05:00 PM (#2779215)

Dude his age really shouldn't do that. I think I'm too old for tip-frosting, and Edmonds
is older than I am.
   58. Bunny Vincennes Posted: May 13, 2008 at 05:15 PM (#2779225)
And frankly, if they are really bent on a CF, why not finally make the deal for Coco Crisp, who when he cools down may still be better than both Edmonds and Pie.
   59. Petunia Posted: May 13, 2008 at 05:22 PM (#2779232)

I love this theory. If you never trade your prospects, they never pan out for any other team. Your team sucks too, but it's not as though anything could have been done about it, they just never had any talented players. The fault probably lies in scouting and development. That's so funny.
   60. robinred Posted: May 13, 2008 at 05:59 PM (#2779252)
Living in SD, I have seen Edmonds play a few times this year. I simply cannot believe the Cubs are doing this with the idea of making him the platoon CF. I could certainly see a contender picking him up as a LH bat off the pine, maybe even to play two times a week, but if they actually demote Pie to let Edmonds platoon in CF, that is a mistake. Is that REALLY what they are going to do for sure, or is the lead-in just speculation?
   61. SouthSideRyan Posted: May 13, 2008 at 06:07 PM (#2779260)
They're going to do it robin. Edmonds wants to come to the Cubs, the Cubs want him badly.

This sucks.
   62. retro-shiite Posted: May 13, 2008 at 06:10 PM (#2779264)
Is that REALLY what they are going to do for sure, or is the lead-in just speculation?

There is neither the roster space nor the availability of other work for Edmonds on the Cub roster to suggest
they'll be doing anything else.

It's a bad move when the best that can be realistically hoped for is for (1) the player to get injured,
as he often does, or (2) for him to suck badly enough that the idea of using him in a significant
role passes quickly.

re: me saying they were leading.

I hate to admit this, but I turned on last night's rerun on CSN and thought it was today's game. I've been really busy the last few days, and spent today chasing a 1 year old around the house. I turned on CSN in the background. I'd be even more embarrassed to admit how long it took me to figure it out. Zambrano should have tipped me off.
