At 6:30 I walked the mile and half from my office to a west loop bar to meet up with some other Primates. It was mostly sunny, and actually fairly nice outside. An hour later it looked like World War 3. I will simply never get used to rain in the summer. It's simply wrong for there to be rain between April 15th and November 1st.

Any video of Berkman running off the field? That had to be hilarious, but only in retrospect.

I always hated the dry summers in California. Having moved away, I miss them to some extent, but the brown grass, the patina of dust and exhaust on everything, the pall of smog, yuck. Not worth it for the relative lack of bugs and humidity. I always looked forward to the winter when I lived there.

MLB.com has the video of Berkman running off, though it is nothing special.

Not worth it for the relative lack of bugs and humidity.
I was just home last week for a few days and it was glorious. A little warm in the sun, but really nice in the shade. Didn't even notice any smog. The air quality has gotten better and better every year out there since about the late 1980s. I remember having trouble breathing deeply on smoggy days as a kid, but it's way better out there now.
I simply hate the fact that I can make plans to do something on a summer day and get rained out. I prefer the predictability.

Well, there's summer rain, and then there's this. I've never seen anything like it in the city.
There always seems to be one summer storm in Chicago that is just an extreme doozy. Green skies, flooded streets, blinding rain, lightning, trees falling, telephone poles falling, locusts. . .
In Dallas I believe it usually happens in the winter months.
Well, that was fun. it started off bright and sunny with the six o'clock start. By 7 it was looking like a night game. By 7:30, you could tell it was going to get bad. Then the downpour started. Lightning was everywhere. You could see it out over the lake, and behind us to the west. Just before 8 came an announcement unlike any other I've heard in 24 years of going to Wrigley Field. "The National Weather Service has issued a severe weather alert. Everyone is advised to take cover. That means the bleachers and the grandstand."
We got out of there. Dashed to the El, and made our way home getting quite the light show all the way. I assume those who stayed through the delay either did not have work this morning, or did not have a 13-year-old with them, but I am very impressed.
In baseball news, the Cubs just can't hit this Moeller guy, and the Astros are coming. The wildcard is within reach, and they've got a good 2nd half team. The Brewers better stop fighting and start winning some games.
My power went out after the fifth inning, so I watched the condensed game at about 4:30 this morning. It just stops in the bottom of the eighth without explanation. ####### monkeys could do a better job putting those things together.
"People want to say the umpires should have done this," Berkman said. "The umpires are under pressure from the league. Those guys are trying to do a job out there. This crew is a great crew with Wally bell and Laz (Diaz) and those guys. They do a great job. I'm sure that if you talked to Wally, he'd say 'hey, we wanted to call it but the league frowns on that kind of thing. They want us to get these games in'. We as players certainly understand that.
"I don't blame them. But I think Major League Baseball needs to take a hard look and implement, even for the safety of the players, you go back out there and it's sloppy. Not to mention that you've been sitting around for 2 1/2-3 hours, it's easy to pull a muscle. To me, in the interest of the game, they need to have some sort of time limit on 2 1/2 hour delay, at that time it's mandatory that you either postpone it or reschedule it or bang it or whatever point you are, that's what needs to happen.
"I know it's money driven and TV driven, but when it comes to the overall health of players and the fans and the sport in general, I think you certainly need to review those policies and maybe do a better job of implementing some things in situation like tonight."
and he's dead right.
we get storms like this plenty here (like right NOW) and sending the players back on the field was a bad idea.
geary hurt his leg slipping. and one of the reasons that the cards lost the NLCS in 05 was that we had to play on the soaking wet field in st louis and reggie sanders slipped in the OF and couldn't play

Yeah, and my power's gone out in both of the last two annual doozies. It's really feckin' annoying. Let's see if they restore it in less than 70 hours this year.

Listened to the game on my XM radio when I went to bed...At times I could have swore the storm was above my house. I have never heard thunder come through the radio so clear.
Well, there's summer rain, and then there's this. I've never seen anything like it in the city.
I gave a final last night in McHenry. Upon leaving the building, I looked to the west where the sun was setting. I have never seen a sky than blood red in my life. It was actually extremely pretty. I wished I could've driven in the direction of the sunset.

Berkman's running off the field was pretty good. Sinatro ducking and cover like we were under attack was way better.

I know ####-all about lightning, but I do know that standing out in an open field is a bad idea in a storm. Is a baseball field open enough to get hit, or would the lightning be more likely to hit something like a light tower first?

I agree - long-time posters who suddenly change names without indicating who they are/were really throw me for a loop. But then again, I do like "Kitty Galore" as a name. I guess somebody's been accusing BBC of having gonads again.

The latter is more likely, but you could still be in danger from that. Having been in a situation similar to this (Radiohead concert in Bull Run VA, sudden MASSIVE TYPHOON, lightning striking a tower inside the premises while the water was already a foot or so deep on the ground), I can vouch for the fact that the situation is terrifying - people started running like terrified mice after the thunderclap - and the danger is very real. In fact, speaking of Radiohead, I remember that a fan actually got STRUCK by lightning when they were playing at RFK Stadium for the 1998 Tibetan Freedom Concert. The guy was apparently just leaning against a (metal) railing in the stands, not being negligent. So it definitely can happen.

And looking it up, I see Berkman's from central Texas; he's probably experienced enough tornadoes to get the hell out of there when he sees weather like that.

it's like this:
I'm glad I'm a woman
Yes I am, yes I am.
I don't live on Budweiser
Beer nuts and Spam.
I don't brag to you boys
about my erections;
I won't drive to Hell
before asking directions.
I act nice at ballparks
don't act like a clown;
and of course I put
the damn toilet seat down
I don't grab my boobies;
I won't pinch your butt (exception for Bradley Hotness and Grady Size More)
My belt is not hidden
beneath my beer gut
I don't go around
with my hand in my crotch;
or make sure my headboard
bears each hard-earned notch.
I don't belch loudly in public
or scratch my behind.
I'm a FEMALE you see
I'm just not your kind
I'm a woman, yes female
and proud, don't you see?
I'm blessed to have a vagina
and squat when I pee.
I'm a woman, a female
And thankful I am
I'm so glad I'm a woman
Not a man, yes I am!

20 years ago this week (on a Monday no less) was the Cubs' first attempt at a night game at home. It rained about like it did last night, though without quite as much "tornadic" activity.
