Curt Schilling Heads to Persian Gulf as Part of USO Tour

Somebody get Colonel Maggie’s wheelchair out of mothballs!

Free agent and former Red Sox pitcher, Curt Schilling announced today that he will visit troops stationed in the Persian Gulf as part of a week-long USO/Armed Forces Entertainment tour. As part of a trip to “extend America’s well wishes,” Schilling will visit and shake hands with service members, sign autographs and pose for pictures. He will also talk baseball and share his experiences as a major league pitcher and 6-time All-Star.

“I am extremely honored and humbled that the USO has allowed me to participate in a tour of the Persian Gulf,” said Schilling. “I would argue there has never been anyone more proud of being able to do this than I am. I know it’s very small in the grand scheme of things for the troops deployed in an active war zone, but this is absolutely a highlight of my life and something I’m as proud to be a part of as anything I’ve ever done. To be able to say thank you at a time of year that I can’t fathom being apart from my family is a true honor. I am proud to accept the invitation.”

Gotta say, even though I think Schilling is a blowhard attention speaker with none of the funny charm of many other blowhard attention seekers, this is a class-act move on his part. Good for him.

Pet peeve: people saying they are humbled by something when they mean almost the exact opposite.

Gov Palin was (truly) humbled by her Veep selection. How did that go?

I demand that all Curt Schillings be home from the Persian Gulf by the end of 2011.

Former Red Sox pitcher? Does this mean that they've announced that they will not seek to resign him? Or, even better, that he's retiring?

Now, with that out of the way, I'll say that this is a nice move by him. Hopefully they'll remember to send him to an area not manned by Yankee fans.

Okay. Nice move by Schilling. Sure. Or so it seems. Look at this first sentence:

I would argue there has never been anyone more proud of being able to do this than I am.

So no one else is as proud of giving back to armed service members as Schilling? Bob Hope was never this proud after his hundredth such trip as Curt Schiling is after this one?

Schilling has an incredible way of making stories that should be about others completely about him. And that's why he annoys me enough to post about it.

Good for Schilling, I don't think much of his personality, but his charity is generally outstanding.

On a totally unrelated note, my first thought was that I was surprised he only made six All-Star teams, but that's actually pretty good, even the all-time leader for pitchers is Clemens (10) then the Big Unit (8).

Schilling: "I never heard such cheering. Wait a minute, yes I have!"

just checking b-ref: Glavine also was on 10 AS teams, and there are a couple more who were on 8 (Ryan, Gibson, Maddux, Pedro)

I'm not sure how relievers compare, but Rivera's at 9 (as was Goose).

People are clearly doing this better than I, who just looked at the Games Pitched list on BBRef, which obviously doesn't count the selected-but-didn't-play occasions.

That having been said, I think my original point about 6 being a decent total remains.

Yes, because MLB managers are more interested in picking players (that in their perception) help them win a game (All-Star) than honorng the best players. Hence, we get treated to the annual stoopid ritual of bringing the 5th best reliever to the game, instead of the 7th best starter. When your AS team consists of 3 players at each position and only 6 SPs, it sure is a challenge (and a honor) to make the AS team as a SP!!
