Dallas News: Grant: Blalock isn’t reason for Young’s potential move (RR)

Evan Grant introduces his “Tops Razor” (sounds like Headon wandered into Sid’s...uhh, dressing room) stat…

Revised zone rating (RZR), a refined version of zone rating (both of which sprung from the mind of Fielding Bible author John Dewan, who ranked Young as the worst defensive shortstop before 2006), has Young fifth overall right now and second in the AL. According to the RZR, Young was 17th his first year, bottomed out at 24th in 2005 and has steadily gotten better since. He was 14th in 2006, 11th in 2007 and fifth this year.

Now, just for fun, let’s factor in offense. Lets come up with a formula. Call it “Tops Razor” or TOPS (Total of On-base-Plus-Slugging and Revised Zone Rating). Just add OPS and RZR and voila! another index is born. Young’s Top Razor for 2007 was 1.597, which ranks 10th in baseball. Troy Tulowitzki had the top number last year (1.699), and Jimmy Rollins was second (1.578). Among 2007 AL shortstops, Young ranked behind Miguel Tejada (1.647) and Carlos Guillen (1.632).

Bottom line: If the Rangers are going to move Young, they are going to have be sure they’ve got a shortstop capable of being among the 10 overall best in baseball. That has nothing to do with Blalock.

Two weeks ago, Hank Blalock decided he'd move to first base

And two weeks ago, I decided to clean my gutters. Hank and I have made comparable progress since.

I like TOPS.

Is it just me or is this total nonsense? Ignoring the fact that Blalock's already been on the DL for a month, and leaving 2B, the OF, and DH out of it, the Rangers are currently playing either Blalock/Young/Shelton&Catalanotto;(Blalock at 3B) or Vasquez/Young/Blalock (Blalock at 1B). Infield defense is pretty bad in the first case and offense is terrible in the second. Just because Young himself rates as well above average for the position in combined value doesn't mean you have to replace him with a comparable player. The goal is to improve your team on the field. With Blalock at 1B and Young at 3B, all you have to do is play somebody at SS that can field as well or better than Young and hit as well or better than Ramon freakin' Vasquez and you've made a net improvement (assuming you take as a given that Blalock at 1B would outperform the Shelton/Catalanotto platoon, though I don't think he would, but you could also work in a 1B/DH rotation assuming Bradley can play the outfield and then Brandon Boggs ends up being the one losing playing time, which would be no great crime).

Eric Nadel called Brandon Boggs Wade Boggs last night by accident. That was funny.

“Tops Razor” or TOPS

Who needs this stat when we already have GPA?

Wouldn't TOPS only work when comparing players at specific positions? RZR has a different range of numbers depending on position. SS goes from .864 to .741. CF goes from .949 to .829. 3rd base tops out at .753.

Well duh. That's because CF is the best. If you put nine CF on the field you'd beat everyone.

That helps explain why there are so few 3rd baseman in the HOF, that's for sure.
