Dayton Daily News: McCoy - Cueto - live and in color

Yost watched the 22-year-old [Johnny Cueto] put on a pitching clinic, Dominican style - 6 1/3 innings, two runs, five hits, no walk and eight strikeouts.

Over two major-league starts, Cueto has 13 1/3 innings with 18 strikeouts and zero walks. His record is only 1-0, though, because his teammates forgot to take their bats out of cold storage.

Cueto gave up a run in the third and a solo home run to noted Reds homicide artist Bill Hall and that home run in the seventh nearly plastered a defeat on Cueto’s nose.
...
And isn’t it time we critics (me included) get off Corey Patterson’s back a bit. Yes, most of us want to see Jay Bruce (who is hitting .211 at Class AAA Louisville, by the way). But Patterson’s home run was his third and he also drove in the first run of Tuesday’s game with a single.

He is hitting .269 with two doubles, three homers and six RBIs. I’m willing to back off a little - but, but, but…he STILL isn’t a leadoff hitter.

He has scored six runs, three on his own homers, and his on-base average is .286 and he has one walk. My dog, Barkley, gets two walks a day.

Cueto’s slider… yikes.

Dominican style?

I hate that there are people in my league who think they are brilliant for finding out who Cueto was after his first start. I was praying he would get hit hard so I could get him with my terrible waiver priority. Ah well. I at least have Volquez and Manny Parra.

I was wondering why I hadn't heard much about Cueto until this spring. I heard a lot about Homer Bailey and Gallardo so it wasn't just that I wasn't paying attention. I guess the reason I hadn't heard much about him was because he hadn't started much in the higher levels of the minors. Which makes what he is doing even more impressive.

Cueto is impressive, but the Brewers put on a poor display. They were even more free-swinging than normal.

That said, Cueto's control seems superb.

So, Cueto: next Roger Clemens, or next Pedro Martinez? Discuss.

Don't you know that because Cueto is from the DR, he can't be the next Roger Clemens?

I must say, did anyone notice D Baker actually keep Cueto in the game, he was up at bat, down 1-0, runner on 2nd, 1 out, did I mention it was the top of the 7th? Cueto did advance the runner to 3rd on a FC, but struggled to keep his mechanics together in the bottom of the 7th, got tired/sloppy and Bill Hall took him deep, Brewers got the lead back.

Baker is sure to play this kid into the ground.

Cueto, by the way, does need to clean up his mechanics, there are a lot of moving parts in the follow through, it will lead to an injury. His mechanics get sloppy and he will get hit hard at some point, lose focus and have a turd of a game when tired.

You're overemphasizing the negative a bit, don't you think, Beano?

Hey, that's a 400+ OBP. Assuming he can fetch a bit in CF, he is better than Patterson.

But I dunno, even Bonds couldn't walk 300+ times a year.

As to Baker and Cueto -- I didn't watch the game so can't say if I agree with the decision, but even with the extra work, he threw just 96 pitches and faced just 24 batters. I'd question it more from the strategic angle -- even if you thought Cueto was going strong and your best pitching option for the 7th, was he really that much better an option that it wasn't worth PHing for him in that situation? I tend to doubt it.

Now, can somebody explain why Norris Hopper PH for Votto? PR I could understand.

Right. Revision:

Cueto: next Pedro Martinez, or next Johnny Cueto? Discuss.

Votto was due to face the sidewinder/submarining LHP Brian Shouse, who was quite a bit more effective vs. LHB last year.

Baker probably saw that Hopper hit .351/.385/.441 vs. LHP last year.

How long did it take to come with Barkley, for Pete's sake? What's the cat's name, Romeow?

"How long did it take to come with Barkley, for Pete's sake?"

Naming your pet after a famous animal of the same name is an acceptable practice. And at least "Barkley" beats "Ol' Yeller". Or "Cujo".

The best cat names I have heard are "BattleCat" and "Rebobinar".

If I had a dog I think "Dr. Octopus" would be a good name.

I watched the game last night. I was most impressed with the way he went after hitters, how he set them up, etc. I don't know if it was Cueto or Dusty/Bako calling the shots in terms of pitch selection and setup, but Johnny executed the plan wonderfully. Too bad the Reds hitters made Jeff Suppan look like Greg Maddux.
   23. Red Menace  Posted: April 09, 2008 at 02:00 PM (#2736495)
It seemed to me like Cueto shook Bako off quite a bit. In the fifth with two on he shook off three pitches before striking out Weeks to end the inning.

I was always partial to my cat's name: Clyde T. Knabb.

That is, until I met my friend Matt who named his cat Chairman Meow...

Cueto looked great. Given the way Baker may be tempted to use him, what about a young Doc Gooden...? Or, maybe a young Jose Rijo...?

I'm going to be that obnoxious guy with the fantasy question. I've been offered Sizemore/Billingsley for Byrnes/Cueto in a 6x6. How do people think Cueto compares with Billingsley?

What are the 6 and the 6?
   29. ellsbury my heart at wounded knee  Posted: April 10, 2008 at 10:21 AM (#2737789)
AVG, HR, R, RBI, SB, OPS x W, K, SV, ERA, WHIP, K/BB.

Sizemore is probably much better than Byrnes (I doubt he'll steal 50 again), but I don't know enough about the NL to say whether Cueto is as good/better/worse than Billingsley.
My offense is already pretty solid, but my best pitchers are Halladay/Vazquez/Perez/Hughes. Thanks!

Even if you think Dusty killed Prior/Wood, the damage didn't really show until the following year.

I'm partial to Wilson, Prince, Yonex, Dunlop, Slazenger, Yamaha, Fender, Sadowsky, Michelin, Uniroyal, Firestone, Winchester, Remington or Magnum.
