Seems the Cubs are not wholly insane yet.
Hey, the D-Backs win a trade, no matter who they got.
No, he's a pretty devout Christian.
OK, try me.
Pure horseshit.
And you can root for both the Red Sox and the Yankees if you want to.
I hope so, he's better than Suppan, but that isn't really saying much, factor in that he's the fourth pitcher in the rotation and his value in the post season becomes virtually nil(assuming we get there of course) Of course it would be nice to win a game once in a while in which Carp/Waino/Garcia aren't pitching(Cardinals have 15 wins in games not started by those three this year).
OK, but Lance isn't one of them.
Tell it to Saul of Tarsus.
In a related note, last night I dreamed the Rays traded Matt Garza to an imaginary team.
Oh thank god. I had heard rumours that Toronto was after him, which was somewhat baffling given their gigantic pile of catchers in the minors.
That's quite a trade between two also rans.
I suppose Pittsburgh wins in that one, given that Snyder seems to be the one starting quality player in that mess.
If this were the NBA, I would assume that Crosby and Church were being acquired for cap space. But this isn't the NBA.
Robothal is saying it just needs to get through the financial stage, I can't imagine the Cardinals getting hung up on money issues
My thoughts exactly.
Shelley Duncan and Fausto Carmona to the Rangers.
Huh? How does this make sense? The Cards must have something else on the go too.
He's hitting 0.609/0.654/1.435 over the last 7 days. Even if they don't need an emergency spot starter, there's a decent chance you'll see a couple more Bautista HRs - he's currently about as locked in as it's possible to be.
Colletti: “And as for players?”
KW: “None.”
Colletti: “...”
I like Snyder, so it seems like a solid trade for us. Feel bad for Carrasco, though, going to the Diamondbacks instead of a contender like he wanted.
you have to be kidding right? are we getting Eckstein back? Yes Jay has been fantastic for us, and Ludwicks salary was going to get to the point that it was going to guarantee an off season trade anyway, but an in season deal doesn't net you nearly as much.
Uggh, not liking this deal at all, heck I can't think of anyone on the Padres that I would want for this season. Ludwick for Westbrook and a Padres prospect? I just don't see this as a good deal at all
I like this move for Pittsburgh. Solid player, only giving up a RP.
Should have nice trade value in the future if they want to flip him. Could definitely see some Red Sox interest if they don't resign VMart.
Assuming his back is okay, Snyder is a solid add, although he's a bit on the pricy side.
Both prospects are going to CLE.
EDIT: Cardsfanboy is right: One SD prospect to the Cards
StL getting a prospect from SD as well (as per MLBTR).
Money's not a problem. Though if Boston wanted to make an offer over the offseason, I'm sure we'd listen.
I guess if all it took was, um, three expiring contracts, it's, um, an obvious move to make, I guess, since the Pirates have plenty of room under the salary cap. They can play a small lineup and there'll be real matchup problems because one of those guys has to be double-teamed.
Yeah, most people don't realize it, but the Pirates aren't cheap anymore. I really hope they become good. One of my best friends is from Pittsburgh, and I'd love to head out there to see some meaningful baseball.
You have to assume one of Doumit/Snyder gets traded this off-season.
Hey, he gave Thome to Colletti for nothing last year. Maybe he thought the take-a-penny-leave-a-penny concept applies to former Cleveland sluggers.
Sadly, I'm not sure how "reliable" a catcher Doumit is at this point, with the concussions.
Considering how rare 100 OPS+ catchers seem to be, they're likely to get a decent return as well for whichever one they move.
Right, it's a budget-clearing move, but I think a wait-and-see approach with Pujols is the wise tack, given his relative "struggles." IOW, take as much time as you can for further evaluation without pissing him off to the point of no return.
I hope that means the deal falls through entirely, because I'm not sure how that trade works for the Indians--they only save a little money this year, Ludwick's due for a raise next year, and aren't the Indians pretty set in the outfield for 2011? (And giving up Ludwick and a prospect for Westbrook would be lunacy.)
Following up from our conversation in the other thread, this might be too sustained a pace to be just a fluke year. If he really has developed into a middle of the order hitter, he's worth hanging onto given that they're not going to buy that type of production on the open market. And this team, compared to the ones they've fielded during the rest of the frustrating past decade, is at least fun to watch.
I don't want to see Fred Lewis or EE starting ahead of Snider though. That makes negative sense to me...
I didn't think so. They've just traded their LF, and they really have no idea what they're going to get out of their CF, and Trevor Crowe isn't exactly blowing people away this year. Combine all that with the likely need for a DH partner for Hafner, and they seem like they should have plenty of AB for someone like Ludwick.
Unless, of course, I'm forgetting someone.
Even if he only holds half his gains, that would make him a 0.250/0.350/0.500 RF with a plus arm. I agree that's worth hanging onto, unless they're blown away.
And this team, compared to the ones they've fielded during the rest of the frustrating past decade, is at least fun to watch.
This is certainly true. The all-or-nothing approach at the plate has been a pleasure to watch. While the slumps are ugly, it's a joy when they're blasting out a chain of extra-base hits.
I don't want to see Fred Lewis or EE starting ahead of Snider though. That makes negative sense to me...
Well, Overbay will be gone next year, and Lind is again being talked about for 1B, which opens up a lineup spot. It's very likely that they'll have DH available for Snider, as well as part-time work in LF/RF. They'll certainly find a way to get him enough ABs.
Unless, of course, I'm forgetting someone.
Have they given up on Brantley being a starter?
That would be the guy I'm forgetting.
Next year, but for right now it just seems counterproductive to not give as many ABs to Snider. His injury came just as he was getting it figured out at the plate, and out of everyone on the roster he's got the highest ceiling. Seems a bit like how the D-backs treated Upton until he really caught fire.
They'll get him his time over the next couple months. I'd expect him to be in some sort of job sharing arrangement with Lewis and Lind, with platoon considerations, assuming Overbay stays. If Overbay goes, then he'll get full-time DH work until the end of the year (assuming the Jays give Lind an extended tryout at 1B).
Luxury tax implications?
Because it looks like the D-Backs turned a potentially useful trade chit into nothing more than cash. Given the holes that some teams around the league have at C, it seems suprising that they couldn't get more than salary relief.
This. Snyder was worth B-prospects at the very least. Saving $4M being the only thing they get? Ridiculous. Did they hire Bavasi to replace Byrnes?
Attendance is awful, the local economy is awful (and still declining!) and the team is awful. I don't see any green shoots here.
Dbacks have been trying to trade this "potentially useful trade chit" for almost a year. They've offered him around more often than a pimp offers LT an underage prostitute. His trade value is what the market says his trade value is. If y'all think you are so smart at acquiring B-prospects for sunk cost, am sure 30 teams out there would love to have your resumes this afternoon.
If not bleeding money. Just look across town at the Coyotes.
However, the TX Rangers may have joined them.
However, the TX Rangers may have joined them.
The Rangers apparently have several buyers lining up to bid, and no one is talking about needing to move them to make them viable. They're nowhere near the status of the Coyotes, who can't even find an owner who wants them (or who wants them to stay in Phoenix).
The one reserved for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.
It wouldn't be B-prospects for sunk cost. I just don't see how saving $4M on Snyder helps the D-backs unless they're indeed bleeding money. If the financial situation is so dire, they probably picked the deal that would save them the most money. But, if the D-backs *aren't* bleeding money...then yes, I think we could do better. Can't prove it, of course. Just because you're a Major League GM doesn't mean you're making the best deal available. Moreover, if the D-backs *are* bleeding money and as a result needed to save the most money on any deal, then the situation has nothing to do with Snyder's "trade value"--but instead his monetary value. A team that wasn't so screwed that they had to save the most money on every deal would have gotten at least B-prospects, guaranteed.
Another salary dump. I wanted to see good baseball deals today, not the 1998 Marlins Memorial Trade Show.
UGH.
Ned, there is no defense for this one.
ADDENDUM: I can see one upside - this gives LA first crack at Lilly in case they don't re-sign Kuroda (and I don't think he's coming back).
This may not be just a dump if the minor-leaguers are good.
EDIT: Thanks Tripon. So this could actually help the Cubs.
EDIT2: How is Wallach a prospect? .776 OPS as a 24-yr-old at A+.
Matt Wallach? That's Brett Wallach. Which guy did the Dodgers trade?
Expendable or not, it's a pointless trade for the Dodgers. DeWitt is better and cheaper than Theriot, and Lilly isn't going to get LA into the postseason.
I'll say it again: They shoulda been selling, not buying.
