Deadspin: Cops Tell Different Tale About Fan Who Was Ejected Over “God Bless America”

The NYPD, however, has a different recollection and shared it with the Daily News:

“A police spokesman said Campeau-Lampion was thrown out because he was “standing on his seat cursing, using inappropriate language and acting in a disrespectful manner while reeking of alcohol.”

Amazing, my entire faith in the honesty of Drunk Atheists has been shaken. Why would he have lied to Deadspin? Why? WHY!?!

Well, that settles it then. NYPD cops never lie, of course.

Nor assault innocents. Never.

Maybe they are both lying and the real truth is too terrible to know.

The people at the game largely seem to be siding with the fan:

"That's ridiculous," said the [Yankees season ticket holder], who asked not to be identified. "That's completely false."

. . .

Meanwhile, after seeing CBS 2's report on the incident, witness Pete Montenez contacted CBS 2 to refute the officers' story. He does not know Campeau-Laurion, but was sitting near him during the game, saying he watched as it all went down.

"As far as him hootin' and hollerin' and standing on the chair, no way," he says.

This is an ejectable offense at Yankee Stadium? No wonder people keep questioning the sell-outedness of their games.

There's something to this link that makes me worry about going there...

Anyone disagreeing with the NYPD is obviously lying.

Asked to explain why officers clubbed Ronan Tynan, an NYPD spokesman said that Tynan had been singing at the top of his lungs and had been walking with a noticeably unsteady gait.

Before the cops issued a statement, was there enough for a lawsuit? Assuming the fan's account is right (and the cops are lying), is there now? (I'm not suggesting that he is completely innocent, that the cops are 100% lying; my question is more concerning libel. And he has to show damages in order to win a libel suit, right?)

Of course they could be telling the truth. I just probably wouldn't recommend saying that in front of a NYPD officer.

This is exactly what bin Laden and the Democrats wanted on 9/11.

Just in case you didn't know: the NYPD is recruiting.
Low pay, shitty hours, but great benefits:
You get to beat the #### out of Yankee fans
   13. Cooperstown Schtick Posted: August 29, 2008 at 05:31 PM (#2922126)
Recruitment might go a bit better among the nearby employables if you mention they get to beat up Red Sox fans. Like... the guy in this story. Just, ya know, to say.
   14. 1k5v3L Posted: August 29, 2008 at 05:35 PM (#2922135)
Whoa... the guy who got beat up was a Red Sox fan?
Well, that changes everything then. Go NYPD!
It's a shame they didn't punch him a few times...

This is the NYPD we're talking about.

The guy's lucky the phrase "Hail of police gunfire" isn't used anywhere.

Where I used to live the common phrase was "police assisted suicide"

You were watching Law and Order last week.

Yet another reason to retire that jingoistic piece of musical crap from all major league parks already.

We (whoever I go to a game with) don't stand for GBA. It has nothing to do with rejecting patriotism and everything to do with rejecting stupidity. Agree with retro here- GBA is pointless and jingoistic- no one really knows why it stuck for so long, but as long as people keep sheepishly standing up for it, they'll keep playing it. Every now and then we'll get a dirty look or someone will make a comment, which is fine. But a lot of people I've talked to at the park have the same attitude. The problem is that even this long after 9/11, having a public conversation about the playing of this awful song is interpreted as anti-American or unpatriotic. So I guess this won't be going away any time soon.

Plus there's the whole theist thing going on at a time when you have a rising tide of atheism in the US. Hopefully some day we'll be a powerful enough block to not want to offend, but probably not.

I wouldn't push past people while they're standing for the song and having a reverent moment. That's kind of rude. This guy must have really been about to burst his seal.

I don't stand for "God Bless America" because it's not the damned national anthem. It's pretty simple. Standing for songs other than the national anthem cheapens the act of standing for the national anthem.

But then you have to listen to "Free Bird".

You mock those who stand for the GBA, but don't you remember the famous saying, "He who will stand for anything, will fall for nothing."

Er, something like that...

I think I've said this here before, but I stand for GBA at Yankee Stadium because it's the 7th Inning Stretch. So I stretch, which means I stand. Unless they start playing Horst-Wessel-Lied before Take Me Out to the Ballgame, I'll stand.

Yes. I'll stand and remove my hat for the anthem. For GBA, I do neither. (At least Wrigley only plays GBA on Sundays, just before the anthem.)
