Denver Post: Atkins starting to look like the odd man out

Starting Monday, the math won’t add up. The Rockies will have five players for four infield spots. Somebody’s going to sit. It will likely be Garrett Atkins, who’s expected to spell first baseman Todd Helton today, if he doesn’t rev up his offense.

“It’s going to create a problem, one a manager likes to have,” Atkins said. “I feel better at the plate. Hopefully, I can keep swinging well and help the team.”

Playing time will become an issue with the return of Troy Tulowitzki. His left hand healed, he will start at shortstop today, moving Clint Barmes to second and Ian Stewart to third, Atkins’ regular spot. Asked if Atkins had to produce to stay in the lineup, manager Jim Tracy said, “absolutely.”

...

The Rockies signed recently released Adam Eaton to a minor-league deal. He went 2-5 with an 8.56 ERA with the Orioles before his May 22 release.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Also, what happened to Atkins? Was that one year just a major fluke?

Buy low, Mets.

Nah. It sounds like they have no desire to have Murphy in LF, which means he's the 1B. And Atkins really isn't much good IMHO.

The trend line on Atkins certainly isn't good -- he's gotten steadily worse in almost every way since 2006, and unless the Mets (or anyone else) is very convinced they have a pretty good line on a 10-minute fix, I think there isn't much reason to take a flyer on him. Even if you wouldn't have to give up much talent, that's the rest of a $7M contract for the remainder of 2009 the Mets would be taking on. That money could be better spend elsewhere, I suspect.

The article made it clear that Eaton was signed only because the Rockies' AAA rotation was thin. He'd have to throw a couple of no-hitters to make the big club.

And if he doesn't, he'll probably file a grievance, right?
